The central argument for the split is the size and diversity
of the unit. (Currently the unit has 53 full-time faculty
and staff members plus numerous adjuncts.) It is extremely
difficult for one chair to lead this unit. With the prospects
of hiring additional faculty, the mere job of mentoring
so many faculty from diverse fields is daunting. The two
new units will share secretarial support at least two
years. There will, obviously, be the cost of a new chair,
though this person will be expected to contribute directly
to the teaching and research missions of the university.
The President, Dean Camp, Chair Venkatasubban, and the
faculty of Natural Sciences support this change.
