ITEM #7 -- FA 00-41: Submitted by the Academic Standards Committee.

Based upon UNF faculty survey and SUS policies, the committee recommends the proposed revised policy for late withdrawals at UNF.

A student may petition for late withdrawal if there are unusual circumstances clearly beyond the student's control. The dean or designee of the student's major college has final approval/disapproval authority. The course instructor does not approve or disapprove the withdrawal, but only assigns a grade of W, WP, or WF. The instructor may recommend an action or write an explanation of the applicable circumstance. The policy does not mean a student has the right to withdraw from a course after the official withdrawal deadline simply because he/she had a passing grade at the time. (UNF Undergraduate Catalog 2000-2001, p. 28)

Rationale:

SURVEY ANALYSIS

  1. 68.6% of responding faculty supported removing "W" from the withdrawal form.

  2. 33.3% of responding faculty reported that they experienced problems in assigning grades after the final withdrawal deadline; 82.9% of those supported removing "W" from the withdrawal form.
Number of responses = 105
