Change the M.Ed. In Special Education, Disabled Services Track.

The following changes are being made to this program track to reflect current trends in the field: (a) The title will be changed from "Handicapped Services" to "Disability Services." (b) Redundancies in course content have been eliminated. (c) Graduate level courses replace some undergraduate courses in the track. (d) More electives are allowed to let students design a more individualized program in concert with their program sponsor. Reduced major requirements by 6 hours and increased major elective by 6 hours. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Foundations of Mental Retardation (3 cr.)

Prerequisites: EEX 3202. This course addresses the nature and needs of students who are mentally handicapped. Historical developments, causation, prevention, medical aspects, classification, and appropriate educational services are considered. Field experience is required. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Advanced Literacy Strategies: Learning Disabilities (3 cr.)

Prerequisites: EEX 3202. This course provides specialized instructional strategies for teaching basic literacy skills to students with learning disabilities and other literacy challenges. The focus is on adolescents who have difficulty understanding academic content areas through reading, writing, problem solving and independent studying. Field experience is required. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Foundations of Learning Disabilities (3 cr.)

Prerequisites: EEX 3202. This course surveys the factors related to the education of students with learning disabilities. Considered are historical developments, causation, related concepts, research and theories in specific learning disabilities, including characteristics, classification of students, and appropriate educational services. Field experience is required. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Advanced Strategies: Emotionally Handicapped (3 cr.)

Prerequisites: EEX 3202. This course examines appropriate academic and prosocial strategies for teaching students with emotional handicaps, including motivational strategies, data-based management, and the implementation of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs). Field experience is required. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Behavior Management of Learners with
Emotional Handicaps (3 cr.)

Prerequisites: EEX 3202 & a basic course in behavior management. This course addresses behavior management techniques designed for students with emotional handicaps. The emphasis is on the application of theories, prevention, crisis intervention, legal considerations, and counseling skills. Field experience is required. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Advanced Functional Literacy Strategies:
Mental Retardation (3 cr.)

Prerequisites: EEX 3202. This course provides functional literacy strategies for teaching students with mental retardation and other learning challenges that preclude high school graduation with a regular diploma. Attention is given to teaching functional literacy and life skills, developmental programming, implementation and evaluation of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), and databased management. Field experience is required. Reduced core requirements by 6 hours and increased electives by 6 hours. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

The following changes are being made to this program track to reflect current trends in the field: (a) Redundant courses have been eliminated. (b) Undergraduate courses have been replaced with graduate courses. (c) The total number of hours in the track has been reduced from 87 to 77. Reduced prerequisite by 4 hours and core requirements by 6 hours. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

The following changes are being made to this program track to reflect current trends in the field: (a) Two redundant courses have been terminated. (b) More electives are offered to let students design a more individualized program in concert with their program sponsor. (c) The total number of hours in the track has been reduced from 42 to 36. Reduced core requirements by 6 hours, major requirements reduced by 3 hours and increased electives by 6 hours. (d) Graduate level courses replace some undergraduate courses. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Change the M.Ed. In Special Education, Varying Exceptionalities Track.

The following changes are being made to this program track to reflect current trends in the field: (a) Courses have been eliminated or moved to prerequisites to reduce redundancies in course content. (b) The total number of hours, including prerequisites, has been reduced from 76 to 66 to meet the needs of out-of-field teachers needing certification. Increased prerequisites by 5 hours, reduced core requirements by 6 hours, and reduced major requirements by 9 hours. (c) Graduate level courses replace undergraduate courses. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Nature, Needs, and Curriculum: Students with
Varying Exceptionalities (3 cr.)

Prerequisites: EEX 3202. This course addresses the nature and needs of students with emotional handicaps, specific learning disabilities and mental handicaps. Also considered are the development of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) and the adaptation of curriculum and materials to meet the need of those students with varying exceptionalities. Field experience is required. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Terminate the M.Ed. In Special Education,
Advanced Study/Add-on Track.

This program of study hinders efficient advisement and recruitment. It will be replaced by three separate tracks: Emotionally handicapped, Learning Disabilities, and Mentally Handicapped.

This is one of three new tracks replacing the terminated Advanced Study/Add-on track. Core requirements are 9 hours. Major requirements are 9 hours. Major electives are 18 hours. Total program hours are 36. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.

Prerequisites: EEX 3202. This course addresses the etiology, characteristics, and educational needs of learners who are emotionally handicapped or seriously emotionally disturbed. Attention is given to prevention, intervention models, and available community resources. Field experience is required. No new faculty needed. No resources needed.
