Information Item #4:
Report on Areas of Focus for Planning the 2000/2001 Budget
Strategic Planning Committee
The Faculty Association's Strategic Planning Committee has reviewed last year's areas of focus for budget planning. We have spoken to our colleagues in our units and to the chairs of other Faculty Association committees to broaden our perspective. With this input in mind, we would like to recommend that the following five issues be areas of focus when planning the budget for the coming fiscal year. The ranking of these items is not exact.
1. Space for classrooms, teaching labs and research labs.
2. Support for technology-enhanced learning. This item includes both software and hardware, but also training and support staff.
3. Faculty and staff pay.
4. The proper utilization, pay, and support of adjuncts. We recommend both replacing many adjuncts by full-time faculty, and better compensation for the remaining adjuncts.
5. Support for research. We identified equipment (defined in a broad sense ranging from test tubes to databases), graduate assistantships, and release time as part of this area.
