A. Educational Services and Research

99-071      APC3      Master of Education: Counselor Education/Mental Health Counseling
This change is to delete the requirement for a statistics course as a prerequisite to the program. A general statistics course has not been found to be a predictive of a student's performance in the graduate level research course. Appropriate statistics are covered in the research course.

99-113       APC3      Master of Education: Hearing Impaired
These changes are requested to strengthen the students' preparation and experience in working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The changes include: changing of the program title to Master of Education: Deaf Education, adding 2 (two) new courses, making name and other minor course description changes to 3 (three) existing courses, deleting the individual study/research course from the program of study, deleting 2 (two) courses from the pos, adding 2 existing courses - SPA4615 and EHD 4245 to the program of study.

99-114       APC1      SPA 6xxx      Sign Communication for the Classroom (3 cr)
This new course focuses on the educational application of the principles of sign communication within the framework of a total communication philosophy. Field experience required.

99-115       APC1      EHD 6xxx      Math/Science/Social Studies Instruction for the Deaf (3 cr)
In this new course students will learn about curriculum trends, teaching techniques and appropriate media for teaching math, science, social studies to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Students will learn about current curricula in use with these students. Field experience required.

99-116       APC1       EHD 5xxx      Curriculum and Instruction of the Hearing Impaired Child (3 cr)
This new course provides an analysis of curricula appropriate for students who are deaf or hard of hearing at all educational levels. The development, adaptation and use of curriculum materials and instructional procedures will be addressed as well as lesson and unit planning. Field experience is required.

99-117       APC2      EHD 6241      Language Instruction for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing
The course title is being changed from Language Instruction of the Hearing-Impaired Child to the new title listed above. The new course description will be A methods course that focuses on the instruction of language arts to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Field experience is required.

99-118       APC2      EHD 6343      Reading Instruction for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing
The course title is being changed from Teaching Reading to Hearing-Impaired Students to the new title listed above. The new course description will be A methods course that focuses on the instruction of reading to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Field experience is required.

99-119      APC3       Bachelor of Arts in Education - Special Education/Varying Exceptionalities track (K-12)
The Special Education program requests that the above Bachelor's degree be added to replace the Emotionally Handicapped, Mentally Handicapped, and Specific Learning Disabilities tracks. The changes reflect local, state and national trends and are an educationally sound response to the needs of preparing UNF's pre-service teachers for the Special Education profession.

99-120       APC3       Bachelor of Arts in Education - Special Education/Emotionally Handicapped track (K-12)
This track will be replaced with the Varying Exceptionalities program. The proposed degree program will allow more flexibility in preparing students for a professional position in Special Education.

99-121      APC3      Bachelor of Arts in Education - Special Education/ Mentally Handicapped track (K-12)
This track will be replaced with the Varying Exceptionalities program. The proposed degree program will allow more flexibility in preparing students for a professional position in Special Education.

99-122      APC3       Bachelor of Arts in Education - Special Education/Specific Learning Disabilities track

This track will be replaced with the Varying Exceptionalities program. The proposed degree program will allow more flexibility in preparing students for a professional position in Special Education.

99-123      APC2       EEX 4200      Pre-K/Primary Children with Exceptionalities
This is a request to change the course title as listed above. This course studies the development variations in young children that affect their cognition, mobility, social-emotional development, and speech and language development. Field experience is required.

99-124      APC2       EMR 4362      Instructional Strategies for Learners who are Mentally Handicapped
This is a request to change the course title as listed above and to change the credit hours from 3 (three) to 2 (two). . This course examines instructional strategies for teaching students who are mentally handicapped including the development, implementation and evaluation of individualized educational plans. Field experience is required.

99-125       APC2      EED 4243      Instructional Strategies for Students with Emotional Handicaps
This is a request to change the course title as listed above and to change the credit hours from 3 (three) to 2 (two). . This course addresses instructional strategies for teaching students with emotional handicaps including instructional techniques and motivational strategies and the development, implementation and evaluation of individualized educational plans. Field experience is required.

99-126       APC2      ElD 4243      Instructional Strategies for Individuals with Learning Disabilities
This is a request to change the course title as listed above and to change the credit hours from 3 (three) to 2 (two). . This course addresses instructional strategies for teaching students with specific learning disabilities including specialized approaches to teaching basic skills, metacognitive skills and adaptation of curriculum and materials. Field experience is required.

99-127      APC2      EEX 4101      Language Development and Disorders
This is a request to change the course title as listed above and to change the credit hours from 3 (three) to 2 (two). . This course addresses language development and learning, to include language development and disorders, the impact of language on learning, and augmentative communication. Field experience is required.

B. Curriculum and Instruction

99-144       APC3      Master of Education - Reading (K-12) Elementary/Secondary
The requested changes will align the program with the current Florida K-12 reading certification requirements. The changes include reducing the number of required hours from 48 to 39-42 and allow LAE6319 or LAE6339 to be taken instead of RED 6347.

99-148      APC3     Bachelor of Arts in Education - Secondary Social Sciences: 6 -12
The requested revisions, as recommended by the NCATE/FL-DOE/BOR evaluation team, will enable program majors to better meet the required certification competencies set by the Florida Department of Education for 6 - 12 Social Sciences. Additionally, one change is due to course re-leveling. The Department of History, the Department of Psychology, the Department of Political Science and the Department of Economics and Geography were consulted in the development of these changes

99-149       APC2      MAE 3312      Mathematics Methods for Elementary Teachers
Change prerequisites to EDG3323, EDG4326, and MAE 3814.
