UNF PROFESSORIAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM
1998-99

PREAMBLE

The 1998 Legislature has provided funds to reinstate the State University System's Professorial Excellence Program on a competitive basis in order to recognize and promote excellence and productivity of Full Professors and University Librarians.

Award recipients will receive a $5,000 increase in base salary rate, whether on a nine- or twelve-month appointment, retroactive to the date of the beginning of the employee's 1998-99 employment contract.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Full-time employees in classifications with the rank of Full Professor or University Librarian who have seven (7) or more years in that rank in the SUS are eligible to compete for this award.

  2. No faculty* may receive an award under this program more than once every seven (7) years.

    *The BOR/UFF Agreement stipulates that the term "faculty" shall refer to University Librarians as well as Full Professors.

  3. The Office of Academic Affairs shall prepare a list of eligible Full Professors and University Librarians and notify each individual of her/his eligibility.

CRITERIA

Individual awards are to be based on the faculty member's accomplishments and continuing productivity since promotion to the rank of Full Professor or University Librarian. Evidence of sustained excellence and high merit as a Librarian or in scholarship or creative achievement, teaching, and service is required for a recommendation for these awards. Emphasis must be on accomplishments in the most recent seven years.

APPLICATION

Each eligible faculty member wishing to compete for these awards shall submit a self-nomination packet which shall include:

  1. A signed statement by the faculty member attesting to the accuracy of the information included in the packet and a stipulation on the part of the Chair that the material is consistent with the Chair's knowledge of the faculty member's performance;

  2. A one-page executive summary;

  3. A 6-page summary and discussion of his/her most significant teaching and curriculum efforts, research and publication accomplishments, and professionally related service activities;

  4. A 10-page vita which focuses on a representative listing of teaching, scholarship, and service activities since the last promotion.

The first page of each packet shall be the signed statement of accuracy, followed by the one-page executive summary, the 6-page summary and discussion, and the 10-page vita. Packets shall not include SIR and SUSSAI raw data, course syllabi or handouts, annual evaluations, or other appendices.

Self-nomination packets shall be limited to 16 numbered pages, plus the one-page summary and the statement of accuracy. Margins shall be not less than .5 inches and font size shall be not less than 11 pt.

Applications for eligible faculty are due to the Office of Academic Affairs no later that 5 p.m. on the first Monday in November.

Faculty members who submit materials that are not kept strictly within these guidelines or fail to submit all materials by the deadline will not be considered for an award.

SELECTION COMMITTEE AND AWARD PROCESS

There will be a university-wide PEP Selection Committee whose membership parallels that of the Promotion and Tenure Committee, i.e., eleven full-time faculty who do not have line authority over promotion and/or tenure decisions from the Faculty Association, of whom one shall be elected from the tenured Associate and Full Professors in each of the Colleges and the Library; the remainder shall be elected at-large from the tenured Associate and Full Professors of the Association. No candidate being considered for the award may serve on the Committee.

The Committee will review the packets and, as with promotion and tenure recommendations, forward its recommendations in all cases to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, by December 4. The Provost/Vice President will then forward his recommendations to the President who will announce the final award recipients, by January 7.
