COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN SERVICES Division of Educational Services and Research -Counselor Education Program 98-227 APC 3 Counselor Education Program: Mental Health Counseling Track The changes in the Mental Health Counseling track of the Counselor Education program include the following: 98-228 APC 1 MHS 6XXX (3 cr) Counseling Couples This course is designed as an elective in the counselor education program. Students will learn various models of counseling couples; will practice specific skills, interventions, and assessment procedures appropriate for couples; and will become knowledgeable and skilled in dealing with issues such as cultural differences, gay and lesbian relationships, domestic violence, and crisis intervention. Prerequisite: MHS 6006. 98-229 APC 1 MHS 6XXX (3 cr) Substance Abuse Counseling This course is designed to prepare students for the challenges of working with clients who have substance dependency and abuse problems. Students will acquire knowledge in individual and group treatment approaches, therapeutic interventions and issues. This course emphasizes the acquisition of counseling skills and provides opportunities for students to practice skill-building. Special focus will also be placed on working with special populations including minorities, the elderly, adolescents, and the mentally ill. Prerequisite: MHS 6006. 98-230 APC 2 MNS 6051 (3 cr) Dynamics of Human Development The action changes the course title to "Personality and Life Span Development" and adjusts the course description to read: This course provides students with knowledge of personality and human development theories and research throughout the life span. Dynamics of personality and behavior, as well as their implications for counseling at each developmental stage, will be presented. 98-231 APC 2 MHS 6006 (3 cr) Counseling I: Introduction to the This action changes the course title to "Introduction to the Counseling Process" and changes the course description to: The course provides an introduction to several models of counseling, including both theory and practice. Students will develop basic knowledge and skills associated with client-centered counseling, brief counseling, and cognitive-behavioral counseling. They will become familiar with the mechanics of counseling, including structuring sessions, establishing goals, and evaluating progress. Students will learn to assess their own suitability for a career in the counseling field and will become familiar with the basic counseling literature. Prerequisites are also reduced to MHS 6006. 98-232 APC 2 MHS 6400 (3 cr) Counseling II: Individual Counseling This action changes the course title to "Individual Counseling" and changes the course description to: The course provides students with in depth practice in intermediate counseling skills, as well as knowledge of the major counseling theories. Students will participate in a pre-practicum experience. Prerequisites are also reduced to MHS 6006. 98-233 APC 2 MHS 6510 (3 cr) Counseling III: Group Counseling This action changes the course title to : Group Counseling" and changes the course description to: This course is designed to provide students with theoretical knowledge and skills appropriate for counseling in a group setting. Students will participate in an on-going group, will learn and demonstrate group leadership skills, and will design, conduct, and evaluate a structured group counseling program. Prerequisite changed from MHS 6400 to MHS 6006.
98-234 APC 2 MHS 6401 (3 cr) Counseling IV: Advanced Counseling This action changes the course title to "Advanced Counseling" and changes the course description to : This course provides advanced application of selected counseling theories and intervention strategies which facilitate behavioral changes and personality development in clients. Students will become skilled in case management procedures from psycho-social intake through termination and will develop the ability to work within managed care parameters. The course includes practical experience. Prerequisites: MHS 6400, MHS 6510, MHS 6070. 98-235 APC 2 MHS 6700 (3 cr) Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling This action changes the course title to "Legal, Ethical, and Professional Issues in Counseling" and changes the description to: This course provides students with an overview of legal, ethical, and professional issues that impact counselors. Through case studies, students will become familiar with Florida Statutes and ethical principles which govern the practice of counseling. Students will be knowledgeable of the profession, including history, roles and functions of counselors, and professional organizations. Prerequisite: MHS 6006. 98-236 APC 2 MHS 6070 (3 cr) Introduction to Psychopathology for This action changes the course title to "Psychopathology" and changes the Prerequisite from MHS 6050 to MHS 6006. 98-237 APC 2 SDS 6310 (3 cr) Career & Lifestyle Dev. & Counseling This action changes the course title to "Career and Lifestyle Development." 98-238 APC 2 MHS 6430 (3 cr) Family Counseling I This action changes the course title to "Introduction to Family Counseling" and changes the course description to: This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of contemporary theories and practices in family counseling. Students will acquire knowledge of psychodynamic, humanistic, systems, structural, communication/strategic, and behavioral/cognitive approaches to working with families. Special emphasis will be placed on professional issues and ethical practices in family therapy. Prerequisite: MHS 6006. 98-239 APC 2 MHS 6431 (3 cr) Family Counseling II This action changes the course title to "Advanced Seminar in Family Counseling" and changes the course description to: This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth focus on a particular contemporary treatment approach to working with families. The selected treatment approach (e.g., systems, psychodynamic, strategic, cognitive-behavioral, etc.) will vary from semester to semester. Students will acquire knowledge of basic theoretical concepts as well as the techniques and interventions germane to the specific modality chosen. Special emphasis will be on skill-building and practicing family counseling techniques. 98-240 APC 2 MHS 6610 (3 cr) Clinical Supervision in Counseling This action changes the credit hours from 3 to 1-3. 98-241 APC 2 MHS 6050 (3 cr) Personality & Counseling Theories This action changes the course from a program requirement to an elective.
