ITEM # 1 - FA 98-48: Submitted by the Academic Programs Committee
COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
This request discontinues the listing of courses under Major Electives for the Philosophy Major. Instead, the following generic statement will appear: "Major Electives (3000-4000 level) . Select 5 courses (at least 2 at the 4000 level) from any area of philosophy: PHH, PHI, PHM, PHP.NOTE: foreign culture courses may not be used as electives in the Philosophy major." This change provides a simplification of the APC process for future new electives. At present each time a new elective is added to the menu of possible electives an APC-3 form, as well as an APC 1 form, must be submitted. This action will eliminate the necessity for many APC 3's.
This course is being deleted and replaced by a newly proposed course, EUH 3202, Enlightenment and Power: Europe 1660-1789. This change will eliminate overlap and complete the junior-level European history course sequence.
This course examines European ideas, society, and politics from the restoration of the British monarchy in 1660 to the fall of the French monarchy. It will be an elective within the program.
This course explores the thought of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), focusing on the totality of his "critical" philosophy as expressed in his writings on epistemology, science, metaphysics, ethics, morality, religion, and aesthetics. Attention is also given to Kant's "popular" writings on history, politics and culture. Prerequisites: One course in philosophy or permission of the instructor.
The course offers a systematic introduction into the major issues and ideas of Existentialist thought, drawing on both philosophical and literary works by Jaspers, Heidegger, Sartre, deBeauvoir and Camus, among others. Topics include the definition of human nature, the relation to others, and the possibility of an Existentialist ethics. This course will serve as an elective within the major.
This seminar will examine the causes, strategies, events, and personalities of one of the greatest conflicts of the ancient world. Students will study Thucydides' history and other ancient Greek sources (in translation) to come to an understanding of the war and the methodology of the ancient historian. Prerequisite: one course in history or permission of instructor. This course will serve as an elective within the major.
