Course Description: This is a clinically based practicum course. Doctoral students will, with advisor approval, construct a learning contract that will detail the acquisition of a new or higher level of, clinical skill for which they were not fully prepared at the master’s level. Skills acquisition will be conducted under the direction of a qualified expert preceptor. Upon completion of the course, the student will provide a completed written description of how they achieved the skill(s) identified in the contract. It is expected that clinical logs will document at least 3,000 hours of post master’s supervised experience.

Critical appraisal techniques will be used to review meta-analysis, qualitative metasynthesis, and qualitative secondary analysis to prepare evidence tables. Course Description: In this course the doctoral student will identify, with advisor approval, a problem or question that requires a change in health care or educational services, clinical practices and/or policies that might be addressed in a particular leadership role. This problem should have relevance to current and emerging health care or educational issues. The result of the project will be a scholarly work, written at a doctoral level of complexity, dealing with the results of the evidence based analysis of the service, practice or policy examined. The analysis will be framed against national benchmarks to determine variances in practice outcomes and population trends. Focus is on dissemination of evaluative outcomes and implications for clinical practice to improve practice or patient outcomes.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree

Summary of the Changes:
There are two categories of doctoral nursing education, the research-focused doctorate and the practice-focused doctorate. The research-focused programs offer the academic doctorate, the PhD. The practice-focused programs include entry-level degrees [e.g. the Doctor of Medicine (MD), the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), the Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), and the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)]. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program will prepare nurses at the highest level of practice. The main program outcome would be the contribution of its graduates to improvement in health care via direct service and policy change. In addition, these new DNP graduates will be excellent clinical experts who can engage in the education of new nurses. Some of the benefits associated with a practice-focused doctorate include:
1. The increasing breadth and depth of the nursing profession dictates additional preparation and education the practice doctorate will meet this need.
2. The DNP will provide for enhanced knowledge that is currently needed in the workforce to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
3. Those who require advanced practice knowledge, but do not need or want a strong research focus will have a venue for the advanced educational credential.
4. DNP graduates will provide an increased supply of faculty for clinical instruction.
5. Development of the DNP will ensure the University of North Florida is competitive with recruitment of students and faculty into the Nursing programs.
This new degree will build upon the current MSN degree. The objectives for the DNP program state that upon completion of the program the graduate will be able to:
1. Develop, implement and evaluate new practice approaches based on scientific knowledge.
2. Ensure accountability for quality care and patient safety for populations with whom they work.
3. Demonstrate analytical methodologies for the evaluation of clinical practice and the application of scientific evidence.
4. Utilize technological information systems to evaluate outcomes of care, health care delivery, and quality improvement.
5. Develop, evaluate and provide leadership for health care policy which shapes health care financing, regulation and delivery.
6. Work collaboratively with transdisciplinary teams to meet health care needs of individuals and populations.
7. Analyze epidemiological, biostatistical, environmental, and occupational data for the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs of clinical prevention and population health.
8. Base practice on the application of biophysical, psychosocial, behavioral, sociopolitical, cultural, economic, ethical and nursing science as appropriate to area of specialization.
