4. Events which would monopolize most of the Commons, or which are so noisy that they would disrupt the primary use of the Commons by faculty, are prohibited from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Commons may only be reserved evenings after 5 p.m. and weekends for faculty functions that might include students, parents, alumni, and non-faculty. Such events are limited to those approved in advance by the Director of Faculty Enhancement President of Faculty Association or his/her designee. Persons seeking to schedule events must submit a written request, to the Faculty Association President, in which the nature of the event and its relevance to faculty is clearly articulated. At the end of each academic year, in April, the Director of Faculty Enhancement will submit a copy of all such requests and an indication of their disposition to the Faculty Affairs Committee.
Rationale: The Faculty Commons was created from highly coveted core campus space so faculty could have a private space which they may retreat to for study, contemplation, conversation, informal small group discussion, meals, or merely to escape from students! Adjunct faculty make a great deal of use of this, since many do not have private offices. Over the years, however, the Commons has increasingly been co-opted by a variety of planned events during the week which render the space unusable by individual faculty for its intended purposes. This action restores the Commons to its original purpose. |
