BSH- Health Science Major
Professional Health Studies Track

Summary of Change:
The track is one of two in our AS-BSH bridge program, and the great majority of students interested in this degree prefer the other track. The track to be deleted has been in existence for 5 years, and we have had almost no enrollment, usually only 1-2 students per year. The courses which make up the program of study are currently taught in other programs/tracks within the COH BSH degree, so there will be no problem finishing out those students currently in the pipeline.

Public Health Capstone

-Course description: We have revised the course description to clarify the course components and meet required accreditation standards.
-Credits: This course is listed as v. 3-9 in the catalog; however students are only required to take 6 hours. Therefore the variable credits have been changed from 3-9 to 3-6 to be consistent with the required 6 hours of credit for the course. This course may be taken in 1 semester, or over 2 consecutive semesters of 3 credits each, hence the need for variable and repeatable options. See attached Program of Study.
-Pre-Reqs: The pre-requisites have been changed to include all other required program courses because this course serves as the culminating experience for the program, including a practice experience in the field and a comprehensive examination. ("Completion of all required MPH courses and permission of the Capstone instructor to be given no later than one month prior to the start of the semester preceding course registration.")
-No other courses or programs will be impacted by these changes.
New Course Description:
This 6 credit course may be taken in 1 semester, or over 2 consecutive semesters of 3 credits each. This course consists of two major components: 1) a planned, supervised 300 hour practice experience with an approved public health organization; and 2) the comprehensive examination. During the practice experience students will apply the knowledge and skills learned in MPH core and specialization courses to actual public health problems. The comprehensive examination will assess students’ proficiency in the concepts and skills learned in MPH core and specialization courses. Students must complete both components successfully in order to pass the course. This course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
