Research in Counseling (3 cr hrs)

Prerequisites:

None

Corequisites: None
Course Description: The ability to design, conduct and interpret research is critical for professional counselors. Professional research allows for discovery of new knowledge, better understanding of current practices, and effective professional communications, all of which expand and enhance the practice of professional counselors. In addition, counseling professionals are by definition expected to be accountable for the clinical and programmatic services they render. Therefore, substantive research, program evaluation, and related knowledge and skills are essential for the identification and provision of effective counseling. No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

Masters in Education - Counselor Education Major
School Counseling Track

Summary of the Changes:
Justification:
EDF 6XXX, Research in Counseling (3 cr hrs), will be added under Core Requirements as an alternative to EDF 6480. Students can choose to take either one of the two courses. The required core hours remains at six credit hours.
In recent years, Counseling faculty have received informal and formal feedback from students and program alumni about the need for instruction to prepare mental health counselors to conduct and interpret research. Counselors working in the Greater Jacksonville area report the ability to conduct research and program evaluation are increasingly emphasized by supervisors and employers. Therefore, counseling faculty are requesting a new course: "Research in Counseling" to meet the needs of our students and agencies and schools where they will work. The research course will emphasize how to design and analyze "counseling" data to evaluate and guide the provision of the most effective counseling possible. The research course currently offered to students, EDF 6480, Foundations of Educational Research, does not provide instruction on how to conduct counseling related research or program evaluation. However, faculty recognize that some counseling students will take jobs which will not require in depth knowledge on counseling research and a general understanding of research will suffice.
