BA - Spanish Major Track 1

Summary of the Changes:
The Department of World Languages seeks to terminate Tracks 1 and 2 of the existing BA program in Spanish because as presently conceived the program has proved highly confusing to students in both its tracks. Additionally, they pose complex scheduling problems due to the need to offer regularly a variety of required courses. We are already facing these realities with regard to spring semester 2007. Tracks 1 and 2 will be replaced by a new BA in Spanish.

BA - Spanish Major Spanish Track

Summary of the Changes:
The Spanish BA program was restructured last year in order to address curricular difficulties posed by the Spanish major described in the 2005-2006 Catalog. The following changes were effected: 1) Institution of two tracks to increase student interest in the program; 2) elimination of several courses; 3) minor name changes; 4) identification of prerequisites, although it was done inconsistently; 5) addition of three new courses. Even though the overall intention was positive, the resulting program has proved highly confusing Mo students in both its tracks. Additionally, it poses complex scheduling problems due to the need to offer regularly a variety of required courses. If we do nothing, we will continue to be forced to administer the program on an ad hoc basis. We have already faced these realities at the start of spring semester 2007.
Therefore, the Spanish faculty proposes to modify the program as follows:
1) Combine Spanish Track 1 and Spanish Track 2 into a single Spanish BA track.
2) Require the following courses of all Spanish majors:
a)
Beginning Spanish I and II and Intermediate Spanish I and II (14 credit hours). As is the case now, students may bypass one or more of these classes through placement.
b)
SPN 3242, Spanish Conversation (3 cr. hrs.)
c)
SPN 3300, Spanish Grammar (3 cr. hrs.). Heritage speakers will take SPN 3350, Reading and Writing in Spanish instead of Spanish Grammar.
d)
SPW 3030, Interpreting Hispanic Literature (3 cr. hrs.)
e)
A culture course either in Spanish or English to be chosen from the following:
SPN 3XXX, Hispanic Culture; ANT 4331, Peoples of the Andes; LAS 3020, Peoples and Cultures of the Caribbean; LAS 3033, Peoples and Cultures of Mexico; LAS 3930, Cultures of Latin America; SPN 3500, Peoples and Cultures of Spain.
f)
An advanced literature class to be chosen from SPW 3100, Survey of Spanish Literature;  SPW 3130, Survey of Latin American Literature; SPW 4223, Hispanic Genres; SPW 4400, Periods of Spanish Literature; SPW 4430, Periods of Latin American  Literature.

3) The remaining 15 credit hours will be upper-level (3000-4000) electives. This new structure provides the necessary flexibility to address coherently the needs of all Spanish majors, including traditional humanities students, students intent on pursuing graduate studies in Hispanic literature, culture and linguistics, students who plan to teach, students who seek to develop strong communicative skills, and professions-oriented students who view Spanish language and culture studies as a practical complement to their career plans.
A program description is attached to the APC 3 form.
In addition, the following paragraph will be added under the subheading "Conditions for Studying a Language" (UNF UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2006-2007, PAGE 138), after the initial descriptive paragraph:
"Students who intend to enroll in French or Spanish classes at the University of North Florida, and who have taken one year or more of high school French or Spanish must take the free on-line placement test prior to enrolling so that they may be placed at a level that reflects accurately their language skills. Heritage speakers of French or Spanish are also required to take the placement test."
The third paragraph remains as is.
