Course Description:
This is a concentrated Exercise Science internship under a qualified supervisor in a selected work setting. The internship is designed as a culminating experience which provides the student with an opportunity to practice under careful observation and in cooperation with a skilled practitioner. No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to prepare students for entry into the professional field of exercise science. Students will review and practice entry-level assessment skills, prepare a professional portfolio, secure an internship site, and complete an internship work plan. Students will be provided with information about the variety of agencies and sites where exercise science is practiced. They will explore the variety of professional paths that exist in exercise science in preparation for selecting an internship site. No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

Summary of the Changes:
This request is to remove two courses from the Exercise Science Concentration requirement: HSC 4800 Pre-Internship in Community Health Services (3 credits) and HSC 4814 Community Health Internship (6 credits). These courses will remain in the Community Health Concentration requirement. We wish to replace these courses by adding two new courses to the Exercise Science Concentration requirements: PET 4XXX Pre-Internship in Exercise Science (3 credits) and PET 4XXXC Internship in Exercise Science (6 credits).
The rationale for the request to make these changes to the Exercise Science Concentration requirement is as follows:
HSC 4800 Pre-Internship in Community Health Services helps prepare students for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certification and the professional field of Health Education/Health Promotion. Exercise Science students rarely seek CHES certification or professional careers in the field of Health Education/Health Promotion (they received minimal educational experiences in these areas). When Exercise Science was a minor in the Community Health Concentration, an effort was made to help tailor the Pre-Internship course to meet both the needs of Health Education and Exercise Science students. The enrollment growth in both of these programs has made it impossible to adequately address the needs of these divergent programs in the same professional preparation classroom. Separate sections were initiated in Fall 08 to try to address this issue. Since Exercise Science is housed in the Dept of Athletic Training and Physical Therapy and Community Health is housed in the Dept of Public Health several challenges were encountered with Banner and faculty course coverage that can be addressed by creating a Pre-Internship and Internship course for Exercise Science students in the Dept of AT/PT. The requested action is to make minor changes in the course title, course description and course objectives for NGR 5810: Nursing Research Methods. The new course title is Research Methods for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice. The changes have been made to more closely reflect the language of the School of Nursing philosophy and conceptual framework as well as the language of our major accrediting body.
New Course Description:
This course includes information related to research methodologies and evidence-based nursing practice. The focus is on application of scientific knowledge to advanced nursing practice. The emphasis is on skill development in critiquing, synthesizing and generating research evidence to address specific nursing practice questions or problems. |

Public Policy Implications

Course Description:
This course deals with the shifting paradigms of health care policy. The origins of policy created through legislative and administrative action will be considered. Strategies for policy creation, implementation, evaluation and change will be examined from the viewpoint of advanced practice nursing. No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

Summary of the Changes:
When the DNP program was created, the following core courses were included as required courses in the curriculum:
HSC 6505 Epidemiology 3 credits
HSC 6512 Applied Health Statistics 3 credits
HSA 6905 Health Policy 3 credits
Subsequently, new courses have been created, approved and currently available that will better meet the needs of these students. These courses are:
NGR 6XXX Principles of Epidemiology for Advanced Practice 3 credits
NGR 7XXX Statistical Interpretation for Advanced Practice 3 credits
NGR 6XXX Public Policy Implications for Advanced Practice 3 credits
The School of Nursing faculty request that HSC 6505, HSC 6512, HSA 6905 be removed from the Doctor of Nursing Practice core curriculum and replaced with: Principles of Epidemiology for Advanced Practice; Statistical Interpretation for Advanced Practice; and, Public Policy Implications
