New Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the community health profession and to provide a foundation for subsequent major courses.  Students will become familiar with the responsibilities and competencies of health educators including: assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating health programs; communicating and advocating for health and health education; and serving as a resource person in health education.  Students will also learn to access and critically evaluate health related information, and explore health education ethics, philosophies, and theoretical foundations.  Student development and professionalism is emphasized.

New Course Description:
This course focuses on educating individuals about healthful behaviors and motivating the adoption of a healthy lifestyle in school, community, worksite and other relevant agencies. Methods, techniques and resources used to implement health education programs will be included. The format of this course is an instruction laboratory allowing students to develop, implement and evaluate a variety of methods for delivering health related information to diverse populations.

This course prepares students for the health education/health promotion profession by preparing them for Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certification.  Students will revise/create a resume, prepare a professional portfolio, practice interviewing techniques, explore various professional paths and review professional ethics and etiquette.  Students will secure internship placement from approved prospective sites and create a detailed work plan.  This course must be completed the semester immediately prior to

New Course Description:
The community health internship is the final culminating course providing field experience which allows students to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities acquired during their program coursework. This graded practical experience requires students maintain a workload reflective of a professional in a community health setting. This significant learning opportunity for students is also meant to be a time of service and innovation to the supervising agencies.  This course must be completed during the last academic semester of enrollment. 

Summary of the Changes:
Based on four years of student and faculty feedback related to progression of knowledge acquisition within the Accelerated Prelicensure Nursing track, we are changing the sequencing of two courses: Moving NUR 3816: Professional Nursing Concepts (a 4-credit course) from Semester One to Semester Two and moving NUR 3128: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology (a 4-credit course) from Semester Two to Semester One. The content in NUR 3128 is believed to be prerequisite, rather than corequisite, with other Second Semester courses.  (Click here to view the Program of Study)

The requested action is to change the prerequisite and co-requisite courses currently listed for NUR 3128: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology. This course is taken by some nursing students in their first semester, and by others in their second semester. Therefore, NUR 3065L: Health Assessment of Individuals Across the Lifespan will no longer be a prerequisite, and no co-requisites will be listed.

The requested action is to change the listed prerequisites and co-requisites for NUR 3816: Professional Nursing Concepts by: (1) making the currently listed co-requisite courses (NUR 3065L: Health Assessment of Individuals Across the Lifespan, NUR 3619: Family and Community Assessment, NUR 3066L: Clinical Practicum I, and NUR 3028L: Nursing Competencies) prerequisites; and (2) add NUR 3225: Adult Health Nursing, NUR 3235L: Clinical Practicum II and NUR 3536: Psychiatric and Rehabilitative Nursing Concepts as co-requisites. This is being done to be consistent with the new Program of Study.

The requested action is to delete NUR 3618 and NUR 3816: Professional Nursing Concepts from the listed co-requisites for NUR 3028L: Nursing Competencies, and to add NUR 3128: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology to the co-requisites. NUR 3618 no longer exists; NUR 3816 is being moved from the first semester to the second in the Program of Study and NUR 3128 is being moved from the second semester to the first.

The requested action is to delete NUR 3618 from the listed co-requisites for NUR 3026L: Nursing Therapeutics I and to add NUR 3119: Socialization to Professional Nursing. NUR 3618 no longer exists, and the changes are consistent with the current Program of Study.

The requested action is to change the listed co-requisites for NUR 3065L: Health Assessment of Individuals Across the Lifespan to bring them in line with the current Programs of Study for the three different tracks in the undergraduate nursing program. NUR 3618 will be deleted from the co-requisite list because the course no longer exists. For Prelicensure students: (1) NUR 3166: Nursing Science I and NUR 3619: Family and Community Assessment will be deleted as co-requisites, because not all students take the courses concurrently; (2) NUR 3026L: Nursing Therapeutics I OR NUR 3028L: Nursing Competencies are alternative co-requisites; and (3)  NUR 3066L: Clinical Practicum I OR NUR 3118L: Clinical Nursing Practice are alternative co-requisites.  For RN-BSN students, NUR 3166 is co-requisite.

The requested action is to delete NUR 3618 and NUR 3816: Professional Nursing Concepts from the listed co-requisites for NUR 3066L: Clinical Practicum I, and to add NUR 3128: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology to the co-requisites. NUR 3618 no longer exists; NUR 3816 is being moved from the first semester to the second in the Program of Study and NUR 3128 is being moved from the second semester to the first.

The requested action is to change the listed prerequisites and co-requisites for NUR 3235L: Clinical Practicum II by deleting NUR 3128: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology as a co-requisite and adding it as a prerequisite to be consistent with the  Program of Study.

The requested action is to change the co-requisites for NUR 3536: Psychiatric and Rehabilitative Nursing by (1) deleting NUR 3128: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology as a co-requisite and adding it as a prerequisite; and (2) adding NUR 3225: Adult Health Nursing as a co-requisite. These changes are made to be consistent with the Program of Study.

The requested action is to eliminate all of the listed co-requisites for NUR 3619: Family and Community Assessment. This is requested because, although all undergraduate nursing students take this course,  it is taken during different semesters in the Program of Study based on the particular track in which the student is enrolled.

New Course Description:
This course includes information on the importance of partnerships in promoting community health. The focus is on collaborative planning, implementation, and evaluation of culturally sensitive, evidence-based health promotion and prevention interventions with individuals and populations.

The requested action is to change the listed pre and co-requisites for NUR 4828: Role Transition by: (1) deleting NUR 4465 and NUR 4465L as prerequisites because these courses no longer exist; (2) adding NUR 3235: Adult Health Nursing Concepts, NUR 3536: Psychiatric and Rehabilitative Nursing Concepts as prerequisites to be consistent with the Program of Study.

The requested action is to change the listed prerequisites for NUR 4945C: Professional Nursing Integration by: (1) deleting NUR 4465 and NUR 4465L because these courses no longer exist; and (2) adding NUR 4465C: Women's Health and Pediatric Nursing Concepts and Practice or NUR 3082C: Transition Concepts and Practice as prerequisites; and (3) adding NUR 4636C: Community Partnerships and Nursing Practice and NUR 4168: Nursing Science III as Pre/co-requisites to be consistent with the Programs of Study.

The requested action is to change the NUR 4168: Nursing Science III from A-F grading to a Pass/Fail grading and to change the course description to reflect this. This course is a competency-based course, and the nursing faculty believe pass/fail is a better evaluation mode.
