Skateboards, bikes might go
Proposed Campus Ban

The University of North Florida's Safety Advisory Council is raising the question of banning bikes and skateboards on the core of campus. |
The University of North Florida Safety Council is once again considering a skate ban
on campus.
At its Sept. 17 meeting, the council discussed prohibiting skating on the core of campus (inside the loop road).
This course of action was considered last spring, but the council is now including bicycles as well.
The council tabled the ban, but is planning to increase the enforcement of existing rules and regulations for skating and bicycling.
"I don't believe it will pass," said Student Body President Rachael Tutwiler.
Though Tutwiler said she believes that more needs to be done to enforce the limitations already in place, she said she feels that if a ban were to be instituted that new issues would arise because many students use skateboards and bikes to get to class.
Tutwiler expressed a concern about the already limited amount of parking on campus and how a reduction in these alternative methods of transportation could have a negative impact.
Jasmine Butler, SG attorney general, was appointed by Tutwiler to represent the student body in the Safety Advisory Council.
Butler explained that current university policy states that no non-motorized vehicles are to be used under any of the covered walkways on campus.
"Since this policy has been in effect, the university has expanded," Butler said. "The problem is that nearly the entire path through campus is under a
covered walkway."

The UNF Safety Advisory Council is recommending the closure of the road between the Child Development Research Center and the University Police Department to help reduce traffic accidents in that area.Women's Center. |
A screech echoes through the air as two cars come to a crunching halt.
Accidents like these can happen anywhere, and the University of North Florida is not immune.
As the university continues to sustain substantial growth, traffic on campus and the risk of accidents are both increasing.
In response, the Safety Advisory Council has recommended a closure of the road between UPD and the Child Development Research Center, and UNF has commissioned a traffic study to better understand traffic flow on campus.
There have been 15 traffic crashes since the start of this fall semester and 52 since January 2007, according to the campus crime log.

Faculty, staff watching profiles
About 41 million people use Facebook, including almost 200 who list themselves as University of North Florida faculty and staff members. Friends, students, professors and employers all have accounts these days, so next time you look at your profile, ask yourself: Who's watching?
A Sept. 11 search on Facebook revealed 172
profiles of people claiming to be UNF faculty and
staff members.
Shelly Purser, director of the Health Promotion Department at UNF, has had a profile for five years.
Purser said she has not used her account for anything, but she is aware of fellow colleagues who go on Facebook to check things out.
"I'm part of the Student Conduct Board on campus, and I think students who are coming in for underage drinking violations and things like that, if they have some partying pictures, it's kind of self-incriminating," Purser said.
