POLICE BEAT
Oct. 8 - Exhibition of a simulated firearm
Two University Police Department officers on patrol in parking lot 10 overheard a young woman yelling loudly to another person, whom the officers could not see. The female subject was overheard saying, "You're not going to get me tonight" and continued walking towards UNF Drive.
In an attempt to identify the person the female was shouting at, one of the officers used a pair of binoculars to scan the parking lot.
The officer identified a male subject carrying a shiny, metallic object.
After examining the object, the officer determined that it was a semi-automatic firearm most resembling a Beretta
handgun.
As the male suspect approached the female, he moved the firearm behind his back as if he was trying to hide it from the female. Based on the officer's training and after conferring with his partner, the UPD officers moved in to intercept the suspect. The officers approached the subject from different directions and drew their guns.
After yelling to the suspect to drop the gun, he threw it to the ground and raised his hands. The suspect cooperated with the officers as he was handcuffed and searched. Upon closer examination of the gun, the UPD officers determined that it was an air pistol in the shape of a Beretta pistol.
The suspect stated that the pistol wasn't real and that he was only trying to play a prank on the female subject, as she always plays pranks on him.
She confirmed that she had been under no threat. They were both determined to be UNF students living on campus and neither had any outstanding warrants.
The air pistol was confiscated, as they are not allowed on campus. The male subject was referred to Student Conduct.
Oct. 13 - Verbal dispute
A concerned witness reported an inebriated couple in the midst of an argument to UPD. The complainant said that she saw the female fall to the ground. After that, the male threw the female's purse in her direction, but missed her.
The witness separated the couple and called the police. Upon arrival, the officers made contact with the couple. They said that they had become involved in an argument after leaving a friend's room. The officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the pair. The female told the officer that she had become dizzy and lost her balance.
She denied her boyfriend had thrown her purse. As the couple was calm, the matter was not pursued any further. The female was issued a trespass warning, as she is not a UNF resident.
Her boyfriend, who lives on campus, was referred to Student Conduct.
Oct. 16 - Sick person
A UPD officer was dispatched to Building Q of the Crossings after it was reported that a resident was having seizures. The officer made contact with the subject, who was conscious and breathing with a few minor bruises on his forehead and knees.
The officer contacted Rescue services and the resident was transported to St. Luke's Hospital.
Later that same night, the officer was sent back to the same building of the Crossings due to a reported seizure.
It was discovered that the same resident who had just been sent to the hospital had had another seizure shortly after returning to his room.
The resident was sent back to the hospital and his grandmother was contacted.
