Don’t fear this flock

Canada geese visit the University of North Florida almost every year during the spring season. The geese basically reside on campus for a few months and then leave for a short time after their goslings are born. The UNF geese are non-migratory because they do not fly north, but tend to stay in the Jacksonville area year-round. The UNF campus was designated a bird sanctuary by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in the 1970s.

SG approves $2.69 million budget proposal

Senate has emergency meeting to finalize budget proposal, Foran approves proposal soon after

By Rachel Witkowski
News Editor

Student Government approved the proposed 2006-2007 budget March 8 at an emergency Senate meeting. The $2.69 million budget was finalized March 15 once it received the appropriate signatures.

The total budget increased more than $97,000 from the 2005-2006 fiscal budget of $2.59 million. But SG Comptroller Betty Garris said the increase is not as much as it consistently has been in previous budgets.

“Normally it would be $100,000 or close to $100,000,” Garris said at the meeting.

Substance abuse not curbed by just saying ‘no’

By Matt Coleman
Contributing Editor

As spring break approaches for University of North Florida students, experts on college drinking say even students who say “no” to alcohol and drugs won’t curb the situation.

Many college programs designed to stop substance abuse, such as those by UNF’s Campus Alcohol and Drug Information Center, have recently experienced controversy because of their tendency to use scare tactics to dissuade students from drinking.

Instead of promoting the strategy of “health terrorism,” the center tries to present the information to students in a mutually respectful atmosphere, said Kevin Modglin, director of CADIC.
