UPD finds increase in drug, alcohol arrests on campus

By Ben Bulthuis
Contributing Writer

The University of North Florida Police Department recently released the 2005 statistics for drug and alcohol incidents on campus, revealing an increase in both alcohol and drug-related arrests.

In 2004, UPD officers made 25 arrests for liquor law violations and referred 104 cases to student conduct, according to the UNF Department of Police and Public Safety Web site. The alcohol arrests increased 152 percent to a total 63 arrests, according to the new statistics from UPD. But alcohol referrals decreased 16 percent from 104 cases in 2004 to 87 cases in 2005.

Fraternity faces 9 charges, 39 indictments for underage drinking

By Rachel Witkowski
News Editor

Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity is facing nine charges and 39 indictments after throwing a private social event in Deland late January.

The fraternity rented three charter buses and hired a band, along with alcohol provided by a third party vendor, according to SAE Chapter President Stephen Horne. Photos of the event were posted on Facebook, and when the Interfraternity Council saw it, SAE went to trial Feb. 14 for indictments including underage drinking and possession of kegs.

“People are going to drink, but you just don’t want to be posting it online,” said James Graulich, attorney general of IFC. “It’s against risk management policy.”

Students not seizing scholarships

By Dawn Wind
Contributing Writer

Too many scholarships and not enough applicants — the College of Education and Human Services is adding more scholarships, but not enough students are applying.

Last year, 43 scholarships were awarded to students for the fall 2005 semester, and four were awarded for the spring 2006 semester, according to COEHS program assistant Phyllis Haeseler. No scholarships went un-awarded, but many students received multiple awards.
