Police building named in honor of former chief Martin P. Garris

By Jody Morgan
Contributing writer

After 10 years of waiting, the Police Building was officially renamed the Martin P. Garris Police Building Jan. 26 in honor of a former police chief who spent 20 years serving the University of North Florida.

Martin P. Garris was director of public safety and chief of police at UNF from 1975 to 1995. He helped develop the UNF police agency into a full-service police department and oversaw the construction of Building 41 in 1995.

Garris

After he retired the same year to be chief of community affairs with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the idea to name the building after Martin Garris was under discussion. But it was not until after his unexpected death Sept. 5, 2002 that testimonies from the community and UNF about Martin Garris brought the attention back to renaming the police building.

The Board of Trustees approved a revised university naming policy Jan. 20, 2005 to allow campus buildings to be named after former employees without receiving a monetary gift. Nearly one year later, a plaque was unveiled at the Police Building in honor of Martin Garris.

Smokers restricted to 25 feet from buildings under new policy

By Rachel Witkowski
News Editor

A new policy was implemented, which prohibits tobacco users from smoking within 25 feet of buildings and walkways at the University of North Florida.

The policy took effect August 2005 but was not made known to the general public until January 2006, when a notice was placed in a student update. The policy states that it restricts all tobacco users “to outside areas generally located at least 25 feet away from buildings and heavily traveled walkways.”
