Rate increase proposed

decal prices

"BOT to determine future parking prices"

Raquel Manning
Contributing Writer

The cost of parking passes could increase in the fall semester for the University of North Florida if the Board of Trustees approves an expected proposal by the UNF parking committee later this month.

The proposal calls for a cost increase of 5-7 percent for general parking, housing and discount lot passes, and an increase of 9 percent for premium, reserved and first-through-third-floor garage passes.

The proposal is a revised version of an earlier proposal that would have raised parking ticket fines to $50 and raised housing pass costs to premium pass prices.

Nursing school receives $2 mill. donation

"Money meant to aid severe nursing shortage in Florida"

By Rachel Witkowski
News Editor

More than $2 million was donated to the University of North Florida School of Nursing to help address the nursing shortage in Florida.

UNF President John Delaney accepted a $600,000 donation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Inc. Jan. 10 at Shands Jacksonville. The state of Florida matched the donation at $420,000 and UNF also received a succeed grant from the state for $1.2 million.

“This gift is an example of their commitment to nursing,” said Dr. Pam Chally, dean of the College of Health, who also spoke at the event. “Nursing students will be very positively impacted this year, the next year and the year after.”

Research investigates origins of life

By Svetlana Shkolyar
Staff Writer

Pondering the origins of life on Earth might be the last thing on a student’s mind, but it was the topic of interest at the first of the Natural Science Seminar Series lectures Jan. 13. Robert Vergenz, assistant professor at the University of North Florida Department of Natural Sciences, presented the lecture the “Chemical Origins of Life,” which was based on his research.

Vergenz researches possible origins of life and molecular evolution. His primary study is in understanding molecular evolutionary theory, or the experimentally confirmed mechanisms for the transition from possible early-earth molecules to living organisms.
