Sun fails to shine for men’s basketball

While most students are at home over winter break, the University of North
Florida men’s basketball (3-10, 0-6 A-Sun) team headed on the road.
Action began Nov. 30 with North Florida opening Atlantic Sun Conference play
against Florida Atlantic University. The Ospreys came close to winning their
first Division I game, battling Florida Atlantic to a 77-75 loss. Sophomore
guard Chris Timberlake led UNF in points with 17, while senior forward Alain
Laroche and junior forward Rashad Williams each had 15.
North Florida shot 54 percent overall in its first D-I match but shot 70 percent
in the first 12 minutes of the game.
Women reach .500 in A-Sun conference

Over winter break, the University of North Florida women’s basketball team took
on a host of Division I opponents (4-8, 2-2 A-Sun).
Break began for UNF with stiff competition from Florida Atlantic University in
the team’s conference opener. The Ospreys were unable to hold off the Owls,
falling by a final score 57-43. Freshman forward Antoinette Reames and freshman
point guard Jennifer Bowen led the team in points with eight each.
South Alabama University was up next Dec. 14, in which the Ospreys were held to
29 points, the lowest in team history, as they fell 62-29. Senior forward Jackie
Beik and freshman forward Andrea Dill led the team in points with six each. Beik
also was tied for the game high seven rebounds. The Ospreys headed home Dec. 16
to take on Bethune-Cookman College, edging out the Wildcats 47-45. North Florida
had three players finish the game in double figures, with Dill leading the way
with 14 points and seven rebounds. The seven rebounds tied Dill for the game
high. Senior guard Alana Mountfield and junior guard Tamara Hubbard each scored
10 points.
Swimming wins double in dual meet

The fall season for the University of North Florida’s swimming team ended Dec.
10, with UNF defeating both Florida Southern College (135-65) and Saint Leo
University (144-42).
Sweeping nine of the 11 races against Florida Southern and all 11 against Saint
Leo, the Ospreys brought their record to 5-1 for the season.
The Ospreys captured two wins Jan. 7 in both diving events against University of
North Carolina-Wilmington.
