An evening with the Archbishop

"Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu speaks to campus community"

By Anthony DeMatteo
Copy editor

“Everything I’ve done – I hope – has been inspired by my faith.”

Desmond Tutu has done a lot in his 74 years of life. The former Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, Tutu was one of the key figures in the abolition of apartheid, South Africa’s six decade-long racist system of government. He won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and chaired the post-apartheid Peace and Reconciliation Committee, which was credited with healing some of the deepest wounds in Africa.

Now, Tutu has earned an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the University of North Florida, the school he taught at in 2003, and which his affection for came back to him in a rush when he visited the campus the weekend of Nov. 12.

SG recovers stolen cart, finds it vandalized

By Dave Strupp
Editor in Chief

What seemed like an episode of Pimp My Ride gone horribly wrong turned out to be grand theft and vandalizing of the Student Government golf cart at the University of North Florida.

The six-seater cart was found Nov. 4 on the property of the New Melrose Student Suites by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The cart had been spray-painted orange along the bottom of the cart, on the wheel rims and the words “Fuck You” were written on the top of the cart.

Adjunct professor sentenced to five years probation

By Dave Strupp
Editor in Chief

Former University of Florida associate dean and current University of North Florida adjunct professor Timothy Van Susteren was sentenced to five years of probation Nov. 14 for defrauding UF out of $120,500.

Van Susteren pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges in June. He had been responsible for starting up educational programs for medical doctors at UF. Court records stated Van Susteren told the companies that sponsored the educational programs to include his name on the checks that were to be made out to UF. He then endorsed and deposited 11 checks between February 2003 and July 2004.
