Former UPD chief honored by board

Building 41, which houses the campus police department, will be dedicated to a former university police chief in honor of his outstanding contributions to the university and community. The structure will be renamed the Martin P. Garris Police Building.

Most people get a gift certificate for their birthday, or even a nice pair of socks. For his birthday June 16, the late Chief Martin Garris got a building named for him.

In honor of Martin Garris’ years as director of the campus police department from 1975 to 1995, the Board of Trustees approved a motion to rename Building 41 the Martin. P. Garris Police Building. Martin Garris had been involved in the construction of the building, which was completed during his last year with the University Police Department. Continued...
