Former UPD chief honored by board

Photo by Ian Witlen Building 41, which houses the campus police department, will be dedicated to a former university police chief in honor of his outstanding contributions to the university and community. The structure will be renamed the Martin P. Garris Police Building.

Most people get a gift certificate for their birthday, or even a nice pair of socks. For his birthday June 16, the late Chief Martin Garris got a building named for him.

In honor of Martin Garris’ years as director of the campus police department from 1975 to 1995, the Board of Trustees approved a motion to rename Building 41 the Martin. P. Garris Police Building.
