Witches’ Brew offers tea for more than two

Memo to pagan revelers: The upcoming Pagan Alliance event is BYOT — Bring Your Own Tea.

The Pagan Alliance at the University of North Florida will stir up its next workshop, Witches’ Brew: A High Tea, on March 8. Tea will be served, and both members and visitors are invited to participate in the event, which covers different uses for herbs and teas. Those attending can bring their own teas to share.

Like all Pagan Alliance workshops, the Witches’ Brew is open to anyone — in this case, anyone who wants to learn more about the uses of herbs and teas, according to Lynn C. Brown, president of the club.

“We are very much a learning circle, which means we share what we know and we share what we have learned with the rest of the group,” Brown said. “You do not have to be Pagan.”

Brown formed the club in summer 2004 after noticing the Wiccan Club at UNF was no longer active. Because Wicca is paganistic, she and the other founding members decided that a comprehensive pagan group would be appropriate.

“We renamed it Pagan Alliance to be more inclusive,” Brown said. “We are happy with the number of members so far. A lot of it it depends on how much support from faculty and staff and friends we receive.”

Pagan Alliance now has an official running count of 82 members, numbering atheists, Catholics and pagans on its club list, as well as some parents of UNF students.

“I think having a pagan group on campus is a great thing,” said Jeff Wallace, the parent of a UNF student. “Colleges are places for learning, and it’s good to know the university and the Pagan Alliance can help furnish that learning space.”

The Witches’ Brew workshop will take place at teatime, between 3 and 4 p.m. Finger foods and sandwiches will be served along with — of course — tea.
