UNF loses sophomore in fatal crash
Written by Francine King
Editor-in-Chief

Flowers and messages mark the crash site at Kernan and J. Turner Butler Boulevard where University of North Florida sophomore Michael Azzarello was fatally injured Feb. 27.

Michael Azzarello
Students at the University of North Florida have cause to mourn after the sudden death of a 19-year-old student Feb. 27.
UNF sophomore Michael Azzarello was killed early Friday morning in a car accident on Kernan Boulevard.
Michael was traveling south on Kernan in a 1995 Volvo when he lost control of the vehicle, which crossed over Kernan's northbound lanes onto the east shoulder, flipped several times and struck a J. Turner Butler Boulevard overpass embankment, according to Lt. William Leeper of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Michael, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car when it hit the embankment, Leeper said. He was taken to Shands Jacksonville, where he died at approximately 3 a.m.
Michael intended to major in communications at UNF and was a 2002 graduate of Bishop Kenny High School. Continued...

Book dedicated to UNF student
Written by Danielle Nantz
Contributing Writer

The office bookshelf of Mary Moran, who teaches writing at the University of North Florida, is all but empty. A few stray literature texts, just the basics, are all that occupy the full-sized unit.
A high school math teacher for 23 years, Moran moved from Canada to Jacksonville in 1997 to be near her daughter and to write full time. It was the right equation.
She applied to teach as an adjunct professor at UNF at the suggestion of a friend, and before she knew it, she was teaching -- but her focus remains on her writing.
"I am a writer who teaches," Moran said, "not a teacher who writes." Continued...

Softball snaps streak
Written by Charles Broward
Sports Editor

After a full week's rest, the University of North Florida softball team ended its winning streak of 10 games at home Feb. 28 in the first of a two-game split against the University of South Carolina Aiken.
"I think we're a better team than we showed," coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We should have taken that series. They hit the ball well, though. I have to give them a little credit."
The Pacers handed the Ospreys their first loss since Feb. 7 by a score of 8-7 to open up the doubleheader. Aiken's four runs in the top of the seventh inning erased a 7-4 lead for UNF, a score that was built mostly on unearned runs from both sides. Continued...
