UNF competitive with UM

Jason Matheny
Sports Editor

The University of North Florida's swim team proved it could run - or at least swim - with a major university's program, falling to the University of Miami 129-97, but defeating conference-rival College of Charleston 157-77 Jan. 18 at the UNF Aquatic Center.

UNF finished first in four of the five individual freestyle events. Heather Rasor finished first in the 500-yard freestyle, Shawna Bothwell finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, Gretchen Dolan finished first in the 100-yard freestyle and Jen Tyler placed first in the 50-yard freestyle.

Jamilly Melo placed first in the 100-yard butterfly, while Tiffany Christ finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke. Jennifer Martin, Christ, Genova and Katie Long placed second in the 200-yard medley relay, and the team of Long, Tyler, Jennifer Downing and J. Martin won the 200-yard freestyle relay.

UNF (7-4), will not race again until Feb. 14, when the Southern States Championship comes to the UNF Aquatic Center. The College of Charleston won the 2001 meet in Davidson, N.C.
