Homecoming queens Caron Streibich
In front of a crowd of 583, the University of North Florida's women's basketball team broke a two-game losing streak with a 77-68 home win Feb. 2 over Lander University. Forward Skye Barber, sophomore, scored a game-high 26 points. She also pulled down 19 rebounds for a double-double. UNF is now 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the Peach Belt Conference. Lander fell to 2-16 overall and 1-11 in the conference. UNF dropped to third in the PBC South Division and tied for fifth overall in the PBC with the University of North Carolina Pembroke and Georgia College and State University. Seniors Stephanie Autry and Allia McLeod contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively. Lander starter Samantha Clymer added 19 points while LU's Krissy Hatfield had 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Ospreys led 39-34 at the half, and outscored the Senators 38-34 in the second half. Despite shooting slightly less than Lander percentage-wise, UNF shot the ball more, taking 74 shots and making 31 of them (.419). Lander shot 25-57 (.439). Jan. 30, UNF lost at the buzzer to the No. 1-rated team in the PBC, University of South Carolina Aiken, 54-51. Going into the game, Aiken was ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II. Autry led UNF with 15 points and center Mikel Taylor, senior, added 13. Aiken's Julie Szabo hit the game-winning shot on an inbound play with 1.8 seconds remaining in the game, putting Aiken up by three as time expired. UNF will travel to Armstrong Atlantic State University Feb. 6 and the University of South Carolina Spartanburg on Feb. 9 before resuming home game play Feb. 13 against Armstrong Atlantic.
