Music faculty to strut its stuff Kristina Olsen
The annual concert that features the talents of the University of North Florida music faculty will be Feb. 11. The Music Faculty Showcase will feature more than 12 faculty members performing on a variety of instruments including the piano, saxophone, trumpet and violin. "The Faculty Showcase concerts transcend boundaries," said Dr. Gary Smart, chairman of the music department. "We are proud of the wonderful collection of musicians that work here at this university. We also want to show the striking breadth of their musicianship." Among those performing are Smart, Charlotte Mabrey, who was voted "Distinguished Professor" in August, and Bunky Green, director of the jazz program and an International Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame inductee. The faculty have had numerous experiences in the music community both inside and outside UNF. Smart's works have been performed in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center, among others. He has played around the world as a classical and jazz soloist, concert improviser and chamber music player. For the showcase, Smart will perform on the piano. Keith Javors, director of the Jazz Ensemble I, also will play the piano. Mabrey, director of the Percussion Ensemble, will perform on the marimba. She has been the principal percussionist with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 years. Dr. Bill Prince, who can play 17 instruments, will play the trumpet for the concert. Prince has lectured and performed at colleges throughout the United States and in countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. He has appeared on television in several countries. J.B. Scott teaches trumpet and directs the Jazz Ensemble II. He earned his bachelor's degree in jazz performance from UNF. The annual Music Faculty Showcase was created two years ago following a concert held for the inauguration of Dr. Anne Hopkins, UNF president. It was repeated in February 2001 and has become an annual event. "We need to make the community aware what caliber of performers we have right here at UNF. No need to travel far and wide. First rate musical quality. It's all right here," said Mabrey. The concert is 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Theater. Tickets are $10 for adults and $4 for students. All proceeds from the Music Faculty Showcase go to the UNF Music Scholarship Fund.
