Black, Tyler appear at Ozzie Gras Shaun Yelle
The annual Homecoming comedy show aims to entertain audiences, and if the comedians are lucky, have everyone rolling on the floor. Lewis Black was especially effective in creating an enjoyable evening, but Aisha Tyler had mixed results. Tyler opened up the evening with an impression of the 'ravenous Osprey' in an attempt to draw laughs. The audience responded with a low laugh. This set the tone for the remainder of Tyler's act. She started off talking about gender equality and how women should pick up the slack and start frequenting strip clubs. Her act continued, touching on a lot of sexual facets, ranging from her bedroom behavior to bikini waxes. She commented on her marriage to a "white boy" and went into detail about how "white boys were handy." Many audience members responded with slight shock to this statement and others that took on a racist undertone. While much of the audience enjoyed this humor, many also found it poor in taste. Tyler took a few opportunities to pinpoint people in the audience and make fun of them to try to liven up her act. She commented on the laugh of one audience member, the shout of another and the answer one member gave to one of her questions. I found this to be in poor taste and many audience members, judging by their reactions, shared this opinion. After the end of Tyler's act, which by the response of the audience could be gauged as only a moderate success, Black was introduced. Black started by asking how old the university was and then expressing his displeasure at the fact that he was older than the university. The audience's response to Black's opening, which was one of vast approval, again set the tone for the entire act. For those who have not seen Black in action, he tells his stories in a unique style. He occasionally becomes very cynical and animated, and this only accentuates the hilarity of his act. Black relayed a story about a trip to Miami during which his rental car, a Plymouth Verison parked between a Lexus and a BMW, was stolen. He expressed his confusion on why someone would choose that particular car for a joy ride, because "there is no joy in that ride." Black also expressed his confusion on why Pepsi and Coca-Cola continue to buy advertising space and run commercials. He commented that he wasn't aware of many people who would be convinced to switch drinks by a bad pop singer. Black delved into airport security, religion and his displeasure for the most highly rated cable television station, and also the most useless, the Weather Channel. Black closed his act by thanking the crowd for coming. He said that he had a soft spot for college students, because it was they who discovered him. "If it wasn't for college students," he said, "I'd be off barking somewhere." The Homecoming Comedians gave an act worthy of the UNF Homecoming. Despite a few tasteless jokes by Tyler, the acts in general were hilarious and met with the crowd's approval.
