Constitution and Bylaws
Article I
I. Name
The Name of the organization shall be UNF HISTORY CLUB.
II. Purpose
(1) To enhance the experience of being a History student at the University of North Florida.
(2) To provide a forum outside of the classroom for students interested in historical study and debate.
(3) To promote the study of History by encouraging research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among Historians.
(4) To explore ways to increase our awareness of diverse resources pertaining to History.
(5) To develop resources for use by all club members.
Article II
III. Elected Officers / Executive Committee
(1) Elected officers shall include a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Elected officers must be full-time or part-time students of the University of North Florida during one or more semesters of their term of office. Elected Officers shall service a term of one year in office except for officers chosen by special election to serve out an unexpired term of office resulting from resignation, incapacity or death of the officeholder. Officers may be reelected to office as long as they remain qualified to serve. These elected officers shall comprise the Executive Committee, which shall be responsible for implementing the UNF History Club policy and carrying out ordinary business of the club.
(2) The President must have completed at least 60 semester hours. The Vice-President must have completed at least 30 semester hours. Both must be History majors.
(3) The President shall preside at general meetings and at meetings of the Executive Committee and shall serve as chief spokesperson for the club.
(4) The Vice-President shall preside in the absence of the President and shall succeed to the office of President in the event of the Presidents resignation, permanent incapacity, or death. Duties shall also include notifying all members of meetings.
(5) The Treasurer shall be responsible for fund disbursements and monthly financial reports. President and Treasurer will be responsible to open a bank account with the Educational Community Credit Unit (UNF Branch). Withdrawal of monies from this account must have the signature of both the President and Treasurer. The Treasurer must be a History major.
(6) The Secretary shall keep minutes at all meetings, and be in charge of handling the clubs general correspondence. The Secretary must be a History major.
(7) Except as described in (2) above, the particular duties to be carried out by the individual officers of the Executive Committee shall be determined by the Committee, which shall assign such duties with due regard for an understanding of the particular abilities and experiences of each officer as well as for the current needs of the UNF History Club and its membership. Any officers duties may, with the approval of the Executive Committee, be delegated to another elected or appointed officer, a committee chairperson, or any club member.
(8) Elections shall be held within the first six weeks of the Spring academic term. A minimum of one weeks notice of the election meeting shall be provided to the membership verbally, by mail including e-mail), and/or by conspicuous posting. Officers shall be elected by a majority vote of members present or by proxy. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, runoff elections will be held at the same election meeting. Officers elected shall assume office at the end of the election meeting.
IV. Membership
(1) Primarily a student group, the club shall be open to any UNF community member, including current and former students, faculty, staff, alumni, family members, and friends. Although the Executive Committee shall have the authority to exclude from membership any person whose behavior is clearly inconsistent with the purpose of the UNF History Club, in no case shall such exclusion be based on considerations of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, handicap, or sexual orientation.
(2) Members shall have the right to call into question or to veto, by majority vote, any policy or action initiated by the Executive Committee or any officer. Any officer may be impeached by a two-thirds vote of the members present or voting by proxy at a scheduled general meeting.
V. Finances
(1) The Executive Committees decision to raise the annual dues, currently set at $5.00, shall be subject to approval by the membership.
(2) The annual dues are the sole source of the clubs support.
(3) Dues will be paid in January of every year to renew membership.
VI. Meetings
General (full membership) meetings shall be held not less than once per semester. The summer term may be excepted when it appears that sizable attendance is unlikely. Notification of meetings will take place as set forth in Article III-8.
