A Great October!

November 15th, 2007 by John Chavez, Webmaster

After a long hiatus, I am back to update this website. I do apologize for the long wait. October was filled with many successful events and was a month to remember. A list of events we've had were:

  • Bowling Night
  • Welcome BBQ @ Joe's House / KuyaAte Program
  • Halloween Horror Nights
  • Sushi Dinner @ Fuji's
  • Def Talent Jam
We hope everyone has enjoyed those events and should expect more in the future! Joe, Amadae, and the rest of your officers are working on planning more events for all of us to enjoy. As for now, We have a meeting today later in Bldg 51, Rm 3131 at 7:00pm.

As always, the Officers will be informing you of the upcoming events that have been set in motion and Amadae has been planning a game for us to play during the meeting. Also, we will have guest speakers, Doreen Flippin and Bong Vicente from "Move on Philippines" who will discuss about their organization and their fundraiser projects. They will also be showing a short film called "Kasila."

And yes...there will be FREE FOOD AND DRINKS!!!

We hope to see you there!

The Faces of Asia

October 1st, 2007 by John Chavez, Webmaster

First off, we wanted to thank all those who came to the General Meeting last Thursday. Thanks to all of you, it was a great success. We hope you enjoyed the food and meeting our new officers.

The Jacksonville Asian American Alliance's The Faces of Asia was this past Saturday. It was an awesome experience and we would also like to thank those that attended the event. FSA really got its name out there by performing for all the JAAA members and guests, as well as mingling with them.

We were able to meet many UNF and FSA alumnis. Roy Vicente and Archie Paez were the two we had the chance to talk to the most. They were able to give us some advice and insight on how UNF and FSA used to be.

Something to mention about Archie Paez, he was the person who brought the Filipino Student Association to UNF. He came from University of Florida's FSA and decided to pass along the traditions to UNF. He told us about FSA's past and its events, such as Rice bowl and the Intramural Football and Basketball Games.

Thanks to Archie and Roy, we are in the process of having one or two events added in October. One will be a Filipino Fiesta in Middleburg and another will be a volunteer event. Keep checking here for updates and also your email, as Redner is always on top of informing us all about any changes that occur.

Thank You!

September 20th, 2007 by Redner Salonga, Public Relations

It was great meeting everyone and we look forward to seeing you all again on September 27 @ 7 pm at our FIRST General Meeting of the 2007-2008 school year. We have a feeling that this is going to be our BEST year yet...so, SPREAD THE WORD!!!

August 30th, 2007 by Joe Cunanan, President

Hello FSA Members!

In preparing for FSA's entry into the upcoming academic year, we will need help in FSA through event planning, recruiting, etc.

The following committees listed below will hopefully meet those needs. The duties listed below are just some of the tasks that came into mind. In most cases, just 1-2 members are needed for each committee. You can either be officers or members to be a committee member.

  • Cultural Affairs (Dances/Performances) Committee
    • Plan and coordinate performances for UNF's Worldfest and other events.
  • Event Planning Committee
    • Helping the FSA leaders plan and and create FSA events on and off campus.
    • Plan when and where events will be held and what will be needed to make events happen.
  • Fundraising Commitee
    • Will explore possibilities to raise funds and open a new bank account for FSA.
  • Recruiting/Public Relations Committee
    • Find ways to increase and retain membership.
    • Getting the word out about FSA
If any of you are interested in being in the following committees please reply back or call me at (904) 571-2601. I'll reply back with further details!

Elections!

April 25th, 2007 by John Chavez

Hey guys! Don't forget elections is tomorrow!! We need officers to run FSA next year. The current officers are going into their Junior or Senior years, which means they will be a lot busier and won't be able to run FSA. That's why we need you guys to help out! Heres the information:

Officer Positions
a. President
b. Vice President
c. Secretaries [ Two (2) spots available ]
d. Treasurer
e. Sergeant at Arms
f. Historian

FSA election dates:
April 26- Thursday @ 6 PM on the Quad [area courtyard outside the game room lobby]. This will be a short informational meeting for elections. Candidates will have the chance to introduce themselves, speak with other officers, and officially place their bids for an officer position.

April 27 Friday - All FSA members are encouraged to vote between 12pm and 2pm on the Quad for next years officers.

Please email j.rodil@unf.edu if you have any questions or need directions. The current officers will be there to support and aid the new officers, so don't be afraid of not knowing what to do.

Update

April 11th, 2007 by John Chavez

Hey guys! Worldfest was great yesterday and we hope you had the chance to check out all the dances and performances!! The tinikling dance wasn't as planned, but it turned out pretty well. Thanks to everyone that participated and supported FSA during the practices and performances.

Don't forget, we still have one more event this semester! Our Club Adviser, Ate Tess, will be giving a presentation on the Dynamics of Filipino Families next week, Thursday April 19. Here's the flyer, in case you want to post it up somewhere.

Also, Election time has come! If you have considered helping run FSA next year, please email Joey at j.rodil@unf.edu. We will be meeting up at the end of April to cast in our votes. If you haven't received the email about the Spring Elections, let us know at unf_fsa@yahoo.com.

Thank You Everyone!

March 12th, 2007 by FSA

We just want to THANK everyone who came out and had fun on Saturday!! There were more people than expected and we are glad for that!! You guys made it successful and we really appreciate it. DJ Jaylom, once again, did his thing and got everyone up on their feet and on the dance floor!!

As of right now, the only thing left on the agenda for FSA is Worldfest and elections. For Worldfest, we will be doing the Tinikling and still need a few more clappers if you're interested!! We will also have a tent out there so you can come chill with us and watch the festivities.

As for elections, we need someone to head up FSA next year. The officers, as of now, will be busier with classes, but will still be there to help out and come to the events. We have some ideas for next year, but we can't make it happen if there's no FSA. So, let us know if you want to be an officer next year!! It will look good on your record to be a President or an officer of FSA!!

Masquerade

March 5th, 2007 by John Chavez

Hey guys! How was your weekend? Well I hope you haven't made plans for next weekend because this coming Saturday is the Masquerade Party!

We are expecting a lot of people to come so don't miss out! Invite all your friends and come check out the music of DJ Jaylom! Remember to dress to impress and bring a mask with you. If you don't have one, we'll have one for you. We'll see you guys there!

PhilFest '07

February 14th, 2007 by John Chavez

Hey! I hope you guys still haven't forgotten about us. We've just heard about an event going on down in Tampa.

Mark your calendars for PhilFest '07 taking place in beautiful Tampa, FL from Friday, April 13, 2007 - Sunday, April 15, 2007. Get ready for a weekend full of Philippine culture, food, games, and entertainment. You definitely do not want to miss this fun opportunity for the ultimate Philippine experience this side of the world has to offer! There is something going on every day of the festival for all ages to enjoy! With special Performances by REX NAVARETTE, HARVEY IGBUHAY and "The Twist", and AKI!

For the all the information about PhilFest, go to the events page.

Also we are still looking for more Bamboo clappers for the Tinikling dance. If you don't know how, we can teach you. Nick, our Sergeant of Arms, taught us all last year, so don't worry.

Update

February 5th, 2007 by John Chavez

Hey guys! We hope you guys had a great Super Bowl weekend! Also, we wanted to thank all those that came out Friday to Skate World. We all had a great time and some of us have some bruises to show for it! Pictures will be up as soon as our Historian gets all the pictures together, so keep checking here on where to get them.

Don't forget about our Masquerade party on March 10th. It's a Saturday night. There will be free food and drinks and as well as music provided by DJ Jaylom! It's not a formal event, but be sure to "dress to impress" and get all your friends to come. It will be a lot of fun!

Also, if you wanted to participate in the Tinikling dance for March 31st and April 10th, please e-mail us at UNF_FSA@YAHOO.COM or contact one of our officers. We do need more dancers and clappers and it's a great way for everyone to get to know each other.

Don't Forget!

February 1st, 2007 by John Chavez

Don't forget to stop by the General meeting today at 5 PM in Bldg 14, Room 1700! It's the same building as the game room, and it's in one of the auditorium rooms. We are going to be telling you more about out events as well as ask if anyone would like to be dancers for Worldfest! We will be dancing the Tinikling once again since it was a big hit last year. We're dancing the Tinikling again because we don't really know how to choreagraph any other dances. If any of you know how to do any other traditional Filipino dance, please contact us and let us know!

Also don't forget about our Ice Skating event at Skate World tomorrow, Friday, February 2nd at 7:30. Rentals and rink time total to $10, so it's not expensive at all. We have a lot of people attending so come and meet everyone! Or you can also laugh at me and the officers when we fall. I am probably going to fall down so come have some laughs.

2007 Update

January 23nd, 2007 by John Chavez

We want to start off by apologizing to everyone for not updating any of you about FSA. We, the officers and chairs, have been busy with our classes and have not been able to plan or do anything for the club. But, it's a new year and we a couple of events lined up for this semester including a Masquerade party, Iceskating, and practices to start soon to prepare for Worldfest. For more information, please go to the Events section.

Also to start off the new year, as you have may noticed, I've changed the layout to something more eye pleasing. Keep checking for more updates on events and changes on the site.

Def Talent Jam Update

October 25th, 2006 by Joey Rodil

We have been informed by the UF FSA President and the UF Director of Def Talent Jam 2006: Rewind that the date for DTJ is changed from Saturday Nov. 4th to Friday Nov. 10th, which is Veteran's Day. A double booking occurred at the original club and FSA happened to receive the cut. The new location of DTJ will be 238 Complex. I apologize on behalf of FSA of any inconveniences this change may have caused.

If you made hotel reservations, the President of UF FSA has asked of you to make the proper changes. If you need a place to stay, please email us back so we can forward your information to UF and they can make the necessary accommodations.

Again, on behalf of FSA we do apologize for any inconveniences caused by this change.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to email us

Def Talent Jam

October 24th, 2006 by John Chavez

More information on Def Talent Jam have been posted up, as well as information about the next General Meeting in the Calendar Section. I know it's a bit short notice but we had to get the room first before we posted it out there.

Also meeting notes have been put up so in case you missed a meeting or wanted to know what we discussed during meetings, they're up in the News section.

Lastly, If you haven't already, wish Chase, Nick, Lesley, and Aaron a happy birthday! Their birthdays are all recently so they won't get mad about it... Well, not that mad anyway

Vote Redner

October 5th, 2006 by Redner Salonga

I just want to encourage everyone to come out and help support me for the Student Goverment Senate Elections. They will be held on October 10th and 11th by the UNF Bookstore and Coggin College of Business. Please, take the time and vote for me. I would like to have more culturally-centered events and activites on campus, stronger teacher and student relationships, better parking, better food services, and perhaps a creation of a Asian American Student Union. How does that sound? I am running with the Student's Party who I feel best represent my ideas and views. So, I can be your voice, but it's YOUR choice...

Success

September 24th, 2006 by John Chavez

Last week's Meeting was a success and we want to thank Dr. Tess for taking the time to come out and presenting her studies for us. Thank you to all those who came and signed up. We are excited that many people came and are interested in getting involved with our plans this year. Keep checking this website and your emails for more updates. We hope to see you all at the events and the next meeting!
