2007 / 2008 Recruitment [ January 13 - 18th, 2008
]
The Inter-Fraternity Council runs Formal Recruitment for all general fraternities in both the fall and spring at the University of North Florida. Formal Recruitment is an organized time period where you can come out and meet the men of the fraternities, build friendships, and decide which organization fits you best. There will be a Greek Forum, tents on the UNF Green, and activities in the 1600 Rooms (bottom floor of Building 14, facing the UNF Green).
You won’t be able to miss the advertisements for Formal Recruitment during Week of Welcome in the fall at the Annual Greek Luau on the UNF Green (the Sunday before classes start) or during Greek Promotion Week (happening during the first week of classes in both fall and spring - come over and check it out when you see everyone on the UNF Green!)
Fraternity Recruitment traditionally incorporates unique and individual events for each chapter, ranging from Slip N’ Slide on the Green to reservations at local restaurants, to pool parties at nearby apartment/condo complexes. It is a relaxed atmosphere and YOU have the choice to decide which fraternities to visit.
However, we do ask that you check-out each one, look at all of the information that each one provides you, and make a decision based on the merit of each chapter and the character of the men inside them. Preconceived notions and stereotypes, or what you may have heard about the fraternities, should be left at home. When you give each and every chapter a chance, you will have made a more well-rounded decision in the end!
****All men going through Fraternity Recruitment MUST fill out the necessary form at www.unf.edu/greeklife/frat.php

25 Questions YOU SHOULD ASK During
Formal Recruitment (RUSH):
- What are the financial obligations?
- Besides parties, what do you do?
- What kinds of time-obligations are there if I choose to become a new member – both during my new member period and after?
- What is your Chapter GPA? How does that compare to the
other fraternities/sororities on campus?
- What is your reputation on campus?
- Do you (the UNF Chapter) have any notable alumni?
- What does your National organization stand for?
- If you have a National philanthropy, what is it and what do you do to support it?
- What are some of the things the Chapter is planning on doing this year?
- What are some things the Chapter needs to improve on?
- What are some of the things the Chapter does well?
- What is your new member education period like?
- How does your Chapter compare academically?
- How does your Chapter compare athletically?
- What does your community involvement include?
- What specific organizations are your members involved in?
- What are your planned social activities?
- What makes you unique as a Chapter?
- How many members do you have in your Chapter?
- How long has your Chapter been established at UNF?
- How many members per semester do you accept?
- Does your Chapter or National organization give-out scholarships?
- What new ideas does your Chapter have for this semester?
- How does your Chapter reach-out to the Jacksonville community?
- Can you explain how my membership would be FOR LIFE?
7 Other Things YOU SHOULD DO During
Recruitment:
-
Talk to the other “rushees” to get a sense of who may be interested in the same chapter you are interested in. These are the people you may potentially be spending a lot of time with over the next few years.
-
Go on the National Web sites and see what their National organization is about.
-
If you have questions, feel free to go to the Greek Life Office to ask. Greek Life = Tyler @ tyoung@unf.edu, 904-620-2526.
-
Make up your own mind. You need to make the decision that is right for YOU, regardless of what other people might say or feel, and regardless of who your friends decide to join.
-
Come-out to the Week of Welcome Luau in the fall and the events during Greek Promotion Week (in the spring and fall) on the UNF Green and begin to get a feel for which Chapter you have common ground with.
-
Visit each chapter on the Green during IFC Formal Recruitment Week and then decide which Chapter you would like to be a part of.
-
If you receive multiple bids, carefully consider each Chapter before deciding on which one seems to fit you best.
—————————————————————————————————————————
IFC Recruitment Week is very informal in nature. It is your opportunity to visit each of the fraternity chapters and meet the members. Typically after returning a few times, and if the chapter feels comfortable with you, you will be extended a bid. A bid is an invitation to join a particular fraternity. A common question asked is “Once I receive a bid, does that mean I have to take it?” The answer is no; you are encouraged to visit a few chapters before making a decision on which chapter you would like to join, and yes, you can receive a bid from more than one fraternity. The decision on which fraternities bid to accept is your decision entirely, but one that must be made before the end of Recruitment Week.
