Master of Arts in Biology / Masters of Science in Biology
| Program Overview | The Master of Arts in Biology program is designed primarily to provide K-12 science teachers with advanced coursework in biology. The Master of Science in Biology program is a thesis-based degree centered on original student research. The biological sciences are progressing rapidly; and by interacting with researchers in the classroom, field and laboratory, graduate students will better understand the principal values of science and the ethical requirements of scientific pursuits. |

| Admission Requirements | 1. Applicant must hold the B.A., B.S. Biology, Science Education or equivalent degree from a nationally (or internationally) accredited university or institution (contact the Graduate School with questions). 2. Official undergraduate transcripts from the institution of record: Minimum undergraduate G.P.A. of 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate study is required for admission to the program. 3. Official G.R.E. scores for the General Test: Minimum score (combined verbal and quantitative) of 1000 is required for admission to the program. 4. Official TOEFL scores for students for which English is not their primary language: Minimum score of 570 is required for admission to the program. 5. Letter formally requesting admission to the program; the letter should briefl y address the following: a) career goals including areas of interest (i.e. molecular biology, ecology, etc.). b) relevant educational and employment experience. 6. Three letters of recommendation from references that are able to comment on the applicant's academic and personal attributes as well as the applicant's ability to successfully complete an advanced program of study in biology. 7. Applicant must make contact with a full-time tenure track faculty member who agrees to serve as the student's major advisor (i.e. fulfillment of the above requirements does not necessarily guarantee admittance into the program). |

| Community Connections | The department prepares science teachers for public and private schools through the MA degree and through special summer courses designed for teachers. The department also has an internship program that contributes directly to the welfare of our coastal environment. |
