Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling


Mission
The mission of the Rehabilitation Counseling Program is to promote quality services to individuals with disabilities by educating rehabilitation personnel, providing services to rehabilitation agencies, community-based programs and associations, and sponsoring research related to rehabilitation. The specific goal of the master's program is to graduate students who have the basic foundational knowledge, skills, values, and experiences to enter the profession of Rehabilitation Counseling and to practice as rehabilitation counselors.

Expected Learning Outcomes
• Students will possess the knowledge, skills, and values consistent with the science and application of Rehabilitation Counseling as set for by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE);
• Students will demonstrate the use of counseling and communication skills with individuals with disabilities;
• Students will demonstrate writing, critical thinking skills, and application of research principles in Rehabilitation Counseling;
• Students will demonstrate the ability to assess and individual's needs, develop and implement a rehabilitation plan, and evaluate the outcome of the plan.

Assessment Strategies
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in Rehabilitation Counseling. The passing rate of students taking the CRCC exam will be reported annually, along with the passing rate of the Rehabilitation Counseling Comprehensive Examination. (The Comprehensive Examination consists of 10 multiple choice questions from each of the required courses in the curriculum.) Criterion: % passing [Target: 85% CRCC Examination, 95% Comprehensive Examination]

• Students will demonstrate the ability to apply rehabilitation knowledge, skills, and values by successfully completing a 600 hour internship in a rehabilitation agency/organization. The average rating on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) for each student on the 23 knowledge and skills areas will be reported annually. Criterion: Average rating for each knowledge and skill area [Target: 4.0 for each knowledge and skill.]

• In the capstone Case Management course, students will demonstrate writing and critical thinking skills by achieving a passing score in evaluating a case study. These scores will be reported annually. Criterion: % passing and % achieved in each of the following areas: (a) writing, (b) critical thinking in evaluation of services provided, outcome achieved in case study, and (c) research in support of response. [Target: 95% passing and 90% in each of the areas evaluated.]
