Master of Science in Health: Geriatric Management


Mission Statement
The mission of the University of North Florida's Geriatric Management Program (Master in Science in Health with a specialization in Geriatric Management) is to prepare graduates for careers in management of organizations providing health and social services to the aging population. The program combines classroom theory and practical field experience that establishes a foundation for lifelong learning and offers students service and research opportunities that contribute to the well-being of Northeast Florida's senior population.

Graduate Learning Outcomes:
Students completing the Master of Science in Health specialization in Geriatric Management (MSH-GM) will be able to:
• Apply understanding of the physical, psychological and social factors that impact health status for older adults to decision making in development and management of senior services.
• Assess and evaluate government health policy impacting aging populations.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and competence in the management of aging services organizations.
• Work effectively with older adults, aging service professionals and health professionals in diverse organizational environments serving older adults.
• Develop, organize, synthesize and articulate ideas and information verbally and in writing.

Assessment Strategies:
1) Content/discipline-specific knowledge will be assessed on a course-by-course basis by evaluation of performance on assigned group projects and case studies. Data on pass rates for those students electing to take the Florida Nursing Home Administrators Licensure examination will be collected and reported every three years.
2) Leadership skills will be measured by student performance in assigned group exercises throughout the program and in faculty and preceptor evaluation of student performance in major projects or internship experiences.
3) Communication skills will be measured by evaluation of select written and presentation assignments including the major project or internship experience. A portfolio of student written work will be collected allowing for evaluation of student progress at various points in the program.
4) Indirect measurement will include skills assessments from exit interviews and career progression data from alumni surveys.
