STEP SIX: Submitting the Thesis or Dissertation to the Graduate School (and Library)
Within ONE WEEK after graduation – and no later – the student is required to submit to the Graduate School the following items:
• Two copies of the final, error-free, publishable thesis or dissertation, printed on bond paper
• All signature pages
• An electronic PDF version of the full document, submitted either on a CD or as an e-mail attachment
• A photocopy of the completed THESIS BINDING INVOICE form
• A photocopy of the receipt for payment of binding fees – $10 per copy, paid to the Cashier’s Office• For Dissertations: A completed UMI/Proquest Abstract Publication form – information on this is below
• For Dissertations: A check, made out to UMI/Proquest, for $55 – information on this is below
The Graduate School will ensure that the two copies of the document, along with supporting documentation, are deposited in the UNF Library.
The student is responsible for submitting to the Library all additional copies she/he would like to have bound. The Library will require that the student present a copy of the receipt for payment of binding fees at that time.
Paper Quality
The thesis or dissertation must be printed on the correct paper. Details are in Appendix Two of this Guide, but basically the rule is that the thesis or dissertation should be printed on:
• 20-24 pound, acid-free, white paper
While the Graduate School cannot endorse one brand or retailer over another, it happens to the case that the Staples store in the St. Johns Town Center has a 22 pound, acid-free, white paper under the label “Bright White Multi Use Paper,” and, at the point of this Guide’s inception, it costs $6 a ream (500 sheets).
We recommend that you place one blank sheet of paper at the beginning and one at the end of the document.
Required for Dissertations – UMI/ProQuest Abstract Publication
Instructions for Publishing Your Dissertation Abstract (and Dissertation) through UMI/ProQuest
STEP ONE: Print out the 26-page UMI/ProQuest instruction packet.
STEP TWO: Fill out pages 3 and 4 of the UMI/ProQuest instruction packet.
STEP THREE: We strongly encourage you to choose "TR-1" as your publishing option. This will allow for publication of your dissertation abstract and your dissertation itself – publication of your dissertation through UMI/ProQuest does not mean you cannot publish the dissertation with another press; you retain those rights.
(The "Open Access" options – OA-1 and OA-2 – come with an additional $95.00 fee. This cost is not noted on the form. If you wish to pursue this option – or the options to file for a copyright or have UMI bind copies of your dissertation for you – you must to this on your own.)
STEP FOUR: At the bottom of page 4 you will need to include a "subject category code." Your primary code is 0514 (Education, Administration). You may choose two more secondary codes from the list on page IV and V of the UMI/ProQuest instruction packet.
STEP FIVE: Make sure that you have filled in pages 3 and 4 completely.
Make sure you have signed and dated page 3.
STEP SIX: Make out a check to "ProQuest Information and Learning" in the amount of $55.
STEP SEVEN: Submit the forms and the check to the Graduate School with your dissertation.
