Instructions for Publishing Your Dissertation Abstract (and Dissertation) through UMI/ProQuest
STEP ONE: Print out the 26 page UMI/ProQuest instruction packet.
STEP TWO: Fill out pages 3 and 4 of the UMI/ProQuest instruction packet.
STEP THREE: We strongly encourage you to choose "TR-1" as your publishing option. This will allow for publication of your dissertation abstract and your dissertation itself -- publication of your dissertation through UMI/ProQuest does not mean you cannot publish the dissertation with another press; you retain those rights.
(The "Open Access" options -- OA-1 and OA-2 -- come with an additional $95.00 fee. This cost is not noted on the form. If you wish to pursue this option -- or the options to file for a copyright or have UMI bind copies of your dissertation for you -- you must to this on your own.)
STEP FOUR: At the bottom of page 4 you will need to include a "subject category code." Your primary code is 0514 (Education, Administration). You may choose two more secondary codes from the list on page IV and V of the UMI/ProQuest instruction packet.
STEP FIVE: Make sure that you have filled in pages 3 and 4 completely. (Have you signed and dated page 3?)
STEP SIX: Make out a check to "ProQuest Information and Learning" in the amount of $55.
STEP SEVEN: Bring your UMI forms and your check to the Graduate School. Make sure that the Dean of the Graduate School receives them. He will already have both a hardcopy and a disk (with a PDF version) of your dissertation. All these items will be sent to UMI/ProQuest.
STEP EIGHT: Attend to your Library duties. (1) Print out on bond paper however many copies of the dissertation you would like the library to bind -- don't forget that the Library requires two copies for itself and your college/department/program may require copies, as well. (2) Pay $10 per copy to the Cashier's Office. (3) Fill out the "Thesis/Dissertation Binding Form." (4) Take the form and the receipt you receive from the Cashier's Office, along with all the copies ready for binding, to the Library.
STEP NINE: You're completely done. You have completed every step necessary, and if you haven't started already, you should start making restaurant reservations under the name "Doctor so-and-so."
