Bede Clarke: Barbara Ritzman Devereux Visiting Artist Exhibition

Bede Clarke, Professor of Art at the University of Missouri, is the featured artist for the fifth annual Barbara Ritzman Devereux Visiting Exhibition and Workshop. 


The Barbara Ritzman Devereux Artist Workshop at the University of North Florida is designed to supplement traditional academic and applied art instruction by providing students the opportunity to work with distinguished artists representing a broad range of visual media. 


Clarke earned an MFA from the University of Iowa (1990), and a BFA from Eckerd College (1982). His work is included in public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad. Most recently, he has exhibited at Tingge Ceramics Museum 2012 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA, and Arvada Center for Fine Arts and Humanities, Arvada, CO. 


Clarke focuses on simple, direct methods of working in clay, methods that allow compassion and humanity to be heard over the technical virtuosity of a clever hand and a trained eye. 


The workshop, free and open to the public, will be held in the UNF Ceramics Lab (Fine Arts Bldg 45, Rm 1504), on Jan 28 & 29 from 9 a.m - 5 p.m.

"The medium of watercolor is exhilarating in its ability to produce rich brilliant color, its capacity for incredibly fine detail, and varied textures. I want to convey to the viewer the same sense of sublime meditative beauty that I feel when I creating this work. I enjoy the challenge of depicting difficult shapes, light effects, and textures that occur in my work."

Backdoor Formalism

Backdoor Formalism will feature works by Atlanta-based artist, Scott Ingram, whose work provides commentary of art and architecture in human environments. Ingram often appropriates images from postcards, color plates, books, and catalogs on Ellsworth Kelly, Eero Saarinen, and I.M. Pei. Based in an American aesthetic, his range of art works include paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography as well as functional objects.

This exhibition displays deeply personal works informed by the life experiences of this husband-and-wife team who share close studio quarters in Jacksonville's CoRK Arts District. Wilson’s powerful sculptures explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the masculine, while Hitzig’s mixed media creations resonate with considerations of spirituality.

The annual faculty exhibition of the UNF Department of Art and Design will be held in the UNF Gallery at MOCA to celebrate its tenth year. Recent works in a wide variety of media by professors in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture and ceramics will be featured. UNF professors in art and design are active in regional, national and international organizations including the Southeastern College Art conference, the College Art Association conference, South Graphics international, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, AIGA, ICDA: University and College Designers Association, the Popular Culture Association, the Renaissance Society of America, and the Sixteenth Century Society. Faculty members have exhibited in over forty states and twenty international sites.
