Iota Phi Theta

Organization Facts

On September 19, 1963, at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University), 12 students founded what is now the nation’s fifth largest, predominately African-American social service fraternity: The Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated ®.

The Honorable founders of Iota Phi Theta® were: Albert Hicks, Lonnie Spruill, Jr., Charles Briscoe, Frank Coakley, John Slade, Barron Willis, Webster Lewis, Charles Brown, Louis Hudnell, Charles Gregory, Elias Dorsey, Jr., and Michael Williams. Based upon their ages, heightened responsibilities, and increased level of maturity, this group had a slightly different perspective than the norm for college students. It was this perspective from which they established the Fraternity’s purpose, “The development and perpetuation of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity, and Brotherhood among Men.” Additionally, they conceived the Fraternity’s motto, “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!”

Today, Iota Phi Theta® consists of over 250 chapters located in 40 States, the District of Columbia and the Republic of Korea. The scope of the organization extends throughout the nation, from California to New York; from Wyoming to Florida; and from Wisconsin to The Bahamas Islands.

As Iota Phi Theta continues to grow and strengthen, so will its commitment to make meaningful contributions to society in general, with particular emphasis in the African-American community. Throughout America, Iota Phi Theta ® has come to represent excellence in all areas. The Fraternity is, and shall forever remain dedicated to its founders’ vision of “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!”

Chapter Facts

With the colony being formally organized in the fall of 2008 by Nelson McCoy of Beta Chi, Monwell Benson of the Ball St. Colony, and Mike Ranglin of Zeta Kappa the UNF colony of Iota Phi Theta was founded in the midst of a college on its way to some significant changes and an organization that could meet the needs of the student body. Under the leadership of Brother McCoy (who is also the north Florida State Director), the UNF Colony was formally founded with the initiation of two brothers. Hal Gray and Mark Harris were brought into the chapter in April of 2010.

On a community service level, the UNF Colony has excelled, in contributing to our cities youth in a positive way. The Iota Youth Alliance is known in the Jacksonville area for assisting the city’s youth with the challenges of high school and assists them in their preparation for life after high school (i.e. - preparing college applications/financial aid/scholarship documentation, finding the school that best fit them as an individual, etc.). The Jacksonville Youth Alliance has aided in a number of Jacksonville’s youth enrolling and succeeding in their collegian careers. Some former Youth Alliance members go on to become Iota’s and Iota Sweethearts while others choose different directions within the Divine Nine.
