UNF Foundation First Generation Scholarships

Earning a college degree may seem like an impossible dream to students hoping to be the first in their families to attend college, but it's not anymore. The University of North Florida and the University of North Florida Foundation participate in Florida's First Generation Matching Grant Program. Individual donors and companies in the community generously provide First Generation students with scholarship support through the UNF Foundation that is matched by the state of Florida. We seek to assist students in achieving their dreams of earning a bachelor’s degree while developing leadership and growth through Transformational Learning Opportunities (TLOs) including community service, study abroad, and undergraduate research.

To be considered for these competitive scholarships, you must be admitted to UNF for summer or fall 2018 and provide:

  • Résumé
  • One letter of recommendation (from a teacher, employer, counselor, etc)
    • Note: If the person writing the recommendation letter prefers to send the letter directly to UNF, please have them send it to pathways@unf.edu and include the name of the student in the body of the email.

  • Personal statement – a one-page narrative designed to give the reviewers a picture of you as an individual. The statement should address three items:
    • What is most appealing to you about UNF?
    • What details of your life (your history, experiences, etc.) set you apart from other candidates?
    • How has your work and/or volunteer experience shaped you?

Submit documents as email attachments to pathways@unf.edu and include your N-number in the email. Only complete applications will be considered.  By submitting one application, you will be considered for all scholarships you qualify for. If you have additional questions about these requirements, contact pathways@unf.edu.

Additionally, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which will calculate your financial need. Financial need is calculated as the cost of attendance minus the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA, and other aid received.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Scholarships are only available to first-time-in-college or transfer students.
  • Current UNF students are not eligible to apply for these scholarships.
  • Students may be required to schedule a scholarship interview.  You will be given the date and time for your committee interview.
  • Scholarship offers will be e-mailed to the student's UNF e-mail account.

For PRIORITY consideration, submit all required materials by March 15, 2018. After this date, applications will be reviewed on a funds-available basis.

The scholarship qualifications listed below reflect anticipated standards and award values for the 2017 incoming freshman class. Minimum qualifications and award amounts are subject to change.
