Camp William Penn was the training site for several of the U.S. Colored Troop Regiments, including the 8th U.S.C.T.

Andersonville, or Camp Sumter, was the largest military prison maintained by the Confederate Army. Of the 45,000 prisoners held there, almost 13,000 died in captivity.
