Loan Basics
  • Loans are a form of financial aid that must be repaid. A minimum of ½ time enrollment status is required for disbursement.

We encourage you to borrow only what is necessary to cover your cost of attendance for the academic period. There is no penalty for accepting a partial amount. Review your Federal Loan History on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) to monitor your progression toward the aggregate loan limit.

  • Stafford loans are low interest education loans established by the Federal Government. Click here to view Stafford Loan Limits
    • Subsidized Stafford Loans are awarded on the basis of financial aid, as determined by FAFSA. The government will pay (subsidize) the interest while you’re in school.
    • Unsubsidized Stafford Loans allow you to borrow loan funds beyond your subsidized loan amount, within the loan limits but not to exceed your cost of attendance minus other financial aid. You are responsible for the interest from the time the loan disburses.

  • PLUS loans require an application and credit check. Parent PLUS loans may be used to aid undergraduate dependent children. Graduate and professional students may apply for Grad PLUS loans to supplement their other financial aid.

  • Private loans do not require a FAFSA, but do require UNF certification, satisfactory academic progress, and at least ½ time enrollment.
