Beginning Summer 2010, the University of North Florida will participate in the Federal Direct Loan Program. This change will eliminate borrowing from private lenders for all Stafford and PLUS loans. Loans originated through UNF will be disbursed directly by the federal government. The Direct Loan Program offers an easier and more efficient process for our borrowers and, in some cases, it may cost less.

Private Loans will still be borrowed through the lender of your choice.

Loans are a form of financial aid that must be repaid. A minimum of ½ time enrollment status is required for disbursement.

We encourage you to borrow only what is necessary to cover your cost of attendance for the academic period. There is no penalty for accepting a partial amount. Review your Federal Loan History on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) to monitor your progression toward the aggregate loan limit.

Federal Direct Stafford Loan
Federal Direct Stafford loans are the most common student loans for funding undergraduate and graduate education. A low interest education loan disbursed directly by the Federal Government. Click here to view Stafford Loan Limits.

Stafford Loan Instructions
  • Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans are awarded on the basis of financial aid, as determined by FAFSA. The government will pay (subsidize) the interest while you’re in school.
  • Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans allow you to borrow loan funds beyond your subsidized loan amount, within the loan limits but not to exceed your cost of attendance minus other financial aid. You are responsible for the interest from the time the loan disburses.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan
Federal Direct Parent PLUS loans may be used to aid undergraduate dependent children. Graduate and professional students may apply for Federal Direct Grad PLUS loans to supplement their other financial aid. While Parent PLUS loans do not require a FAFSA, Grad PLUS loans do. Federal Direct PLUS loans require an application and credit check to determine borrower eligibility.

Private Loans
Private loans are not part of the federal education loan programs. They are designed for students who need additional financial assistance to pay for school. Any student considering a private loan is encouraged to speak with a One Stop counselor first.

Private loans require an application directly with the lender and are subject to credit check to determine eligibility. While these loans do not require a FAFSA, they do require UNF certification, satisfactory academic progress, and at least ½ time enrollment. A student cannot receive a private loan that is greater than the cost of education minus other financial aid received.
