Academic Potential Program

The Academic Potential Program (APP) is designed for first time in college students who do not meet the university admission requirement for the fall semester.  Students admitted for this program complete courses during the summer B term.  The term typically begins the last week of June and ends the first week of August.  Students, who are successful in the summer, are eligible to continue at UNF in the fall term.  After the initial summer semester, APP students are held to the same academic requirements as all other UNF students.  The only additional requirement for APP students is that they must meet with an academic advisor regularly in the fall semester.  Please see the links below for additional information about the APP program.

Many students admitted to the APP need to take the CPT for math.  This exam is officially titled the Florida College Entry Level Placement Test.  It was developed by the College Board at the request of the Florida Department of Education.  Florida Statutes require this test.  More information can be found at: http://www.firn.edu/doe/sas/fcephome.htm . This exam is commonly referred to as the CPT and will be referred to as such in all other information on this web site.

The CPT is used to determine the remediation needs of students entering Florida public community colleges and state universities.  The CPT exam is administered to students who have not met the required remediation exemption scores through the ACT and the SAT exams.

In What subjects is the CPT administered?

Students admitted to APP who need the CPT must take the exam for Elementary Algebra. This test is required for students who score less than 440 on the quantitative section of the SAT or less than 19 on the ACT math section.  This test measures the students' ability to perform basic algebraic operations and to solve problems that involve elementary algebraic concepts.  This is a 35 question test and students are given 40 minutes to complete the test.

How the results are used:

Students who score below UNF's established remediation exemption scores on both the SAT/ACT and the CPT are required to complete remedial courses before moving into college level course work in math.  Students must successfully complete the required college-preparatory studies by the time they have accumulated 12 hours of lower division college credit degree coursework.  However, a student may continue enrollment in degree-earning coursework provided the student maintains enrollment in college preparatory coursework for each subsequent semester until college-preparatory coursework requirements are completed.

Retake policy

The CPT Test may be taken a maximum of two times.  Students wishing to retake the CPT must wait at least 30 days.

Cost

The CPT costs $15 when taken through the UNF testing office.  Students interested in taking the CPT at another state community college or university should contact that schools testing office to make arrangements to do so.

How to Read CPT scores

Students admitted to the Academic Potential Program (APP) are required to take two academic courses and a one-credit First Year Seminar course.  Typically the first class is from 9:00a.m. To 10:40a.m. and the second class runs from 10:50a.m. to 12:30p.m. Monday through Thursday.  The one credit seminar meets twice a week for a little over an hour in the afternoons.  Students must complete all courses in the summer program with a "C" or higher to be eligible to continue to fall.  A student who does not complete the summer courses with a "C" or higher is not eligible to return to UNF until he/she has earned an AA degree. 

The First Year Seminar is a participation and discussion based course deigned to familiarize students with campus resources and address student's academic needs.  It includes guest speakers from many campus agencies.  Please see the summer schedule link for examples of the academic courses available to students in the APP. 

The math workshop is a course specific to APP and is required for students who test into remedial math through their CPT exam.  Rather than earning a "C" or higher grade in the math workshop students must earn a "P" or passing grade.  The Math Workshop is offered at the level of Elementary and Intermediate Algebra. 

Another major component of APP courses is College Writing.  All UNF students are required to complete ENC 1101 College Writing.  This class is taught in sections of twenty students.  College Writing is offered in the summer so that students enter the fall semester with a background in how to successfully write at the college level.  This will benefit students overall, and especially as they enter their Literature and Humanities courses.

• I didn't request summer admission so why was I admitted to APP?
  
  UNF offers all students who are not eligible for fall admission, but are admissible for summer APP this option without the students request.  Students should contact the admissions office to discuss what if anything they can do to be re-evaluated for a different admission status.
  
  
• What type of placement testing is required?
  
  APP students must complete one of two placement test in math.  If your admission letter references the CPT exam for math see the CPT exam info link for more information on this exam. Students will need to take the CPT test at their local community college or through the UNF testing office, http://www.unf.edu/dept/testing/, prior to orientation.
  
  Students who do not need the CPT exam will still need to take a UNF math placement test prior to orientation.  Information about this exam will be included in student's orientation information and can be viewed at http://www.unf.edu/admissions/orientation/testing/math_placement.html.  The UNF math placement exam is taken online.
  
  
• I was told that I need to take math workshop in the summer.  Is there a fee for the math in the summer program?
  
  Math workshop is free for APP students in the summer.  Some students will be taking math workshop at the Elementary Algebra level and will be required to take Intermediate Algebra in the fall.  Intermediate Algebra is not a UNF credit course and students will pay FCCJ tuition for the course. 
  
  
• What happens if I do not pass one of my summer courses?
  
  APP students are required to earn a “C” or higher in all summer courses to continue.  If students do not earn a “C” or higher for a course, they will not be invited back to UNF for the fall and must earn an AA degree or 60 transferable hours to return to UNF.
  
  
• Why are students required to meet with an Academic Advisor in the fall? 
  
  The Academic advisor helps students stay focused, keep track of due dates and manage their time.  Students should look to this person as a resource in all matters of their academic lives.  They can also offer referrals to offices that can assist students in issues they may face outside of the classroom. 
  
  
• How much is the APP program?
  
  Students accepted for the APP program pay the regular tuition that all UNF students pay. 
  
  
• I am not from Jacksonville and would need a place to live for summer.  Is there housing available for APP students?

• How are the courses I take determined?  Do I take the same classes in fall?
  
  The courses taken in summer will help fulfill general education or pre-requisite requirements.  Students that are required to take a math workshop in summer will take one general education or one pre-requisite requirement.  Fall classes will be different courses and will fulfill general education or pre-requisite requirements.
