Sawmill Slough in Spring

Textbook Collection
During our end-of-semester textbook collection, we collected 475 pounds of books. These books will not only be kept out of the landfill, but they will be used to help fund literacy programs around the world. Thank you to everyone who donated books. If you did not have a chace to donate earlier, you can still donate books any time at our office in building 1, J.J. Daniels Hall, room 2200.

RecycleMania

 

The annual RecycleMania intercollegiate competition is right around the corner, and we need your help! The Environmental Center needs help planning events for RecycleMania and volunteers to help with a variety of projects, including promotional tabling, chalking,and “caught green-handed” (details about this will be provided at the meeting).    

  

We will be hosting an informational planning meeting regarding RecycleMania at 5p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the Student Union, Rm 3602. This will be a great opportunity for those interested in leadership positions within the Environmental Center. All interested in volunteering or planning are encouraged to attend. Free food will be provided.

Sierra Club Outing at the Sawmill Slough Preserve

 Date: Saturday, Jan. 11, at 10 am

 Location:  Lot 100 near the Eco-Adventures  

 Admission: Free and open to the public

The Sierra Club Northeast Florida Group is hosting an outing on the Robert W. Loftin nature trails in the Sawmill Slough Preserve located on the University of North Florida campus. On the two-hour hike, you will see the lovely vistas that abound in this special natural area, including gopher tortoise nests. This trip is open to the public. Parking permits are not required on the weekends. 


USGBC 20*40 Talks

Date: Thursday, Jan. 14, from 11:30 a.m., to 1 p.m. 

Place Adam W. Herbert University Center 

Sponsor: USGBC North Florida and UNF Environmental Center 

Cost: $15 for full time student (Please bring your Osprey 1Card to check-in for lunch), $20 USGBC North Florida members, $25 non-members  

          

The Environmental Center is offering a limited number of free registrations for UNF students, faculty and staff. Deadline for scholarships is Friday, Jan. 10. 

 

Inspired by Pecha Kucha and Ted Talks, the U.S. Green Building Council of North Florida and the Environmental Center presents "20.40 Talks," a series of four events throughout the year designed to unleash the creativity of the Jacksonville region and foster sustainability. Each event will gather three thought-leaders offering diverse perspectives on how to create a fully sustainable community by the year 2040.

US Green Building Council Social at Aardwolf Brewery
Date: Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m.
Location:  Aardwolf Brewery
Cost:  Free and open to the public
 
The US Green Building Council North Florida Chapter will be hosting a chapter-wide social at Aardwolf Brewery in San Marco. Have a beer, eat an awesome dinner from a local food truck, network and learn more about being green. But most importantly --have fun! This event is open to all, so come out and network. UNF IB Conference

Date: February 21-22
Location:  UNF Student Union 


The UNF International Business Conference provides an opportunity for close interaction among researchers and practitioners. Research, research-in-progress papers and proposals for panel discussions, workshops and tutorials from all areas of business are invited for submission. All papers will be included in the conference proceedings. There will be great keynote speakers, interaction and publishing opportunities.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers Needed for RecycleMania

The Environmental Center is looking for volunteers to help plan, organize and execute the 2014 RecycleMania recycling competition. RecycleMania is a intercollegiate competition between universities nationwide. The Environmental Center is organizing a number of events to help reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills by UNF and to educate the UNF community about waste reduction. Sierra Club Needs Volunteers

Are you passionate about Florida’s natural  beauty? Then the Sierra Club is looking for you! The Sierra Club Northeast Florida Group is looking for passionate students to help further their mission to explore, enjoy and protect the planet. The group is looking for motivated volunteers to help with the Florida Land and Water Legacy campaign, which will reestablish permanent conservation funding. In addition, they have a limited number of leadership positions within the group. These positions are open to students of all majors and are a great way to become involved in the community and build your resume. Interested volunteers should contact James Taylor, UNF Environmental Center coordinator.  

 

Seaton Creek Preserve Trail Maintenance

Date: Monday, Jan. 20, at 8 a.m.

Location: 2145 Arnold Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218

Seaton Creek Historic Preserve is one of Jacksonville's newest parks. The 847-acre preserve will open to the public later this year. In order to prepare the park for opening, volunteers are needed to assist with trail development and other park improvements. Enjoy this opportunity to spend a day breathing in the fresh air and experiencing the parl's natural beauty while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

The Environmental Center staff will be participating in this event, so contact James Taylor if you are interested in carpooling. Be sure to wear a UNF t-shirt when volunteering!
