Dr. Elinor Scheirer, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is this year’s winner of the Susan B. Anthony Award. Scheirer received the award last month in the Robinson Theatre at a ceremony that was the opening event of Women’s History Month activities on campus.

The award, presented by the Women’s Center, recognizes any member of the University community who has made significant contributions to the women of UNF by providing a positive role model, working to improve the position of women on campus through advocacy and education, and exhibiting qualities of leadership.

“I am so touched by this,” Scheirer said at the ceremony. “You are my family. UNF has become my family over the years.”

Scheirer has been at UNF since 1973. She is the president of the UNF Faculty Assembly of the College of Education and Human Services and is the chair of the College of Education and Human Services Executive Committee.

Scheirer received the Outstanding Faculty Service Award in 1999 and the Outstanding Teaching Award in 1991. She has a bachelor’s degree from Chatham College and a master’s and doctorate from The Ohio State University.

“Dr. Scheirer is a very dedicated teacher and an outstanding role model for women at UNF,” said Anita Vorreyer-Hedges, director of the Women’s Center and assistant vice president for Student and International Affairs. “Ellie has taken visible leadership roles on campus, but also exhibits qualities of leadership in her daily work. Most notably, she touches the lives of her students through advocacy and education.”

Vorreyer-Hedges said Scheirer received several nominations for the award from her students.

“(Dr. Scheirer) is an obvious leader in her field,” a student wrote. “She is a great mentor to her students and role model for women in academia.”
Another student wrote, “She works tirelessly for her students, colleagues and the academic community.”

Dr. Berrin Beasley, last year’s Susan B. Anthony Award recipient, served on the review and selection committee for this year’s award.

“It is Dr. Scheirer’s continued commitment to the success of her students, and therefore the betterment of UNF, that epitomizes the spirit in which the Susan B. Anthony Award is given and that earned Dr. Scheirer the award,” said Beasley, an assistant professor of communications in the Department of Communications and Visual Arts.

Magdalena Siwinska and Monique Williams received Women’s Center Leadership Scholarships at the ceremony. The national theme for Women’s History Month this year was “Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility.”
