Dr. Chudley Werch, director of the Center for Research on Substance Abuse at UNF, has received the American School Health Association’s 2003 Research Council Award. Werch was presented with the award at the organization’s 77th national School Health Conference in El Paso, Texas. Werch was honored for dedicating his career to improving the health of children, adolescents and young adults, particularly in the areas of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention. He has published in the past 20 years more than 75 manuscripts, nearly all addressing childhood and adolescent health issues. He has procured 18 research grants for about $7.5 million to study adolescent health issues and to test preventive intervention programs. Werch also is the principal investigator on two National Institutes of Health-funded research grant projects and co-investigator on a nationally funded college binge-drinking intervention project. In addition to being a graduate research professor in UNF’s Department of Public Health, Werch also is a visiting scientist in the graduate school of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.
