New Smyrna Beach graduate named first Hopkins Presidential Scholar

Nathaniel Johnson and Anne H. Hopkins

A New Smyrna Beach High School graduate with an interest in political science and public service has been named the first recipient of the Hopkins Presidential Scholarship at UNF. Nathaniel Johnson, 18, the son of Stephen and Judy Johnson, was selected for the scholarship named in honor of former UNF President Anne H. Hopkins who resigned recently. It was announced as a surprise to Hopkins at her going-away reception on campus. Hopkins
will teach political science when she returns from a one-year sabbatical.

The scholarship, which covers full room, board and tuition charges, is an existing UNF Presidential Scholarship which carries Hopkins name in her honor.

"When I first got the call to let me know that I was getting the Hopkins Scholarship, I was happy beyond words," Johnson said. "Dr. Hopkins' prestige and reputation really offer an extra reward to the scholarship recipient," he said.

Johnson was extensively involved in extracurricular activities in high school including being an officer in the Model United Nations Club, participating in the Civil Air Patrol program and volunteering in several community service programs. He also received varsity letters in tennis and swimming.

He plans to pursue a double major in political science and business administration.
