Tom
VanSchoor, who is joining Student Affairs in the newly created
post of associate dean of students, got some career advice
from an unusual source, his 12-year-old son who wanted to
become a Floridian. "If they ask you if you want the job,
just say yes!" he told his father.
Van Schoor has been the director of Student Life at Queens
College in Flushing, N.Y. and spent four years as the assistant
dean of students at the University of the Pacific in Stockton,
Calif.
"After nine years at Queens College I felt like I had done
what I could do and was looking for new challenges," said
VanSchoor. "I had heard UNF's academics are reputable and
the institutional values and mission are all things I looked
at before making my decision."
His 15-year-old also helped in researching the position.
"My son will be a tenth grader this year and we've already
begun looking at college programs. UNF had many of the ones
I've been interested in while looking at schools with my son,"
he explained.
"We're extremely excited to finally have an associate dean,
said Everett Malcolm, associate vice president of Student
Affairs. "The position is funded through A& S (student activity)
fees and even through the budget cuts the students made the
position a top priority. I applaud them for that."
VanSchoor's office will be in the Robinson Center where he
will have Student Activities, the Center for Student Media,
Club Alliance, Student Life and the staffs of the Robinson
Center and Student Union reporting to him.
He will also serve as the Student Government advisor and
will implement a leadership and development training for students.
"That couldn't please me more," said Malcolm.
Besides his sons, VanSchoor will also be joined by his wife,
Deborah. The family is settling in St. Johns County in Fruit
Cove and are ready to become a part of their new community.
"My wife and I both coach in the Special Olympics and look
forward to getting involved in that and other organizations
in Jacksonville," he said.
Rodney
Grabowski, a development executive with more than a dozen
years of experience in the field, has been named director
of constituent relations and planned giving at UNF.
Grabowski comes to Institutional Advancement from Jacksonville
University where he had been the executive director of development
since 1999. Prior to JU, he was senior development officer
and associate director of annual giving and alumni relations
at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. He is a graduate of Syracuse
University. His experience also includes being a senior district
executive at the Five Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of
America in Bath, N.Y.
"I am excited about the opportunity to work with a great
development team as we work toward conclusion of the $65 million
Access to Excellence capital campaign," Grabowski said.
"The University has an outstanding reputation in the community
and nationwide and I am proud to be able to be a part of it,"
he added.
In his new position, Grabowski shares supervisory responsibilities
of the development officers in each of UNF's colleges and
directs planned giving efforts. "It is my desire to work closely
with the college development officers as they make their programs
stronger and to provide a framework for planned gifts that
will benefit the University for many years to come," he said.
Grabowski replaces Paul Krouse who retired from the position
last year.
