sophomore Anthony Vigliotti put more than 860 miles on his
bicycle this summer as part of his fraternity's effort to
raise funds for charities.
Vigliotti and 28 members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity started
in Miami on May 12 and ended up in Tallahassee on May 25 visiting
13 cities in between including Orange Park and Jacksonville.
In the process, the group raised $57,000 for charities. The
cyclists and crew members made up this year's Gear Up Florida
team which is part of the nationwide PUSH America, a national
non-profit organization serving people with learning and physical
disabilities especially children. PUSH America was started
in 1977 by Pi Kappa Phi.
During the Orange Park visit, Vigliotti and other fraternity
members visited with about two dozen CCAR clients. (CCAR Services
Inc. was formerly known as the Clay County Association for
the Retarded.) The clients and the bicyclists shared a picnic
lunch and played music at the Orange Park Town Hall. The Orange
Park organization will receive $500 from this year's bicycle
ride with the funds going into the recreation fund.
Vigliotti said a fraternity brother showed him a video of
the program last fall and he volunteered immediately. "He
told me it would change my life. It has," he said.
